On SCNU’s campus, a smiling security guard has become an unexpected source of warmth and inspiration for students and faculty. Liu Guolian, a security guard who joined the university in December of last year, has captured the hearts of the SCNU community with his genuine greetings－news that has gone viral on social media.
From dawn till night, Liu Guolian stands at the entrance of the university library every day, waving and wishing everyone a good day. His warm smile and enthusiastic greetings are returned with equally enthusiastic responses from students and faculty. "His smile is radiant and genuine, as if capable of dispelling all exhaustion and sorrow”, a library teacher said. Everyone who passes by him feels the care that generates from the depths of his heart.
Liu's warmth extends far beyond his job at the entrance of the library. He also greets students on the campus: “Good morning! Welcome home!" He waves to students and teachers, offering gentle reminders about library rules, such as not bringing food and drinks inside. When students accidentally bring beverages, he points out the problem with kindness, in an effort to avoid potential conflicts and gain their respect and cooperation.
In a handwritten letter, Liu expressed his deep admiration for the students and teacher, whom he sees as the pillar of the country. He wrote in his letter, "It is a great pleasure to work here and see the vitality and potential in you. You embody the spirit of youth and pursuit of excellence, and I am truly grateful to be able to share this journey with you." Liu also shows a genuine concern for the well-being of students.When he notices they skip meals, he will remind them to take care of their health. During rainy days, he insists on standing outside before the library, even though getting wet, to open and close the door for students, hoping them a comfortable journey. His actions have created a small blessing on the campus.
Beyond his duties as a security guard, Liu is also a fantastic calligrapher, finding pride and joy in practicing his handwriting. To express his gratitude to the students and teachers, he took time to consult with a colleague who is skilled in calligraphy, and carefully wrote his letter, ensuring it presented the best possible writings.
His genuine efforts have not been in vain. The students and faculty have responded to Liu's kindness with warmth and care. They often bring him snacks during meal breaks, and one student even shared a birthday cake with him, moving Liu to tears of gratitude. The feeling of being remembered and cared for by the students makes him cherish his job even more, expressing his wish to continue working there as long as possible.
