On the vibrant and bustling campus of South China Normal University, one individual has captured the hearts of students and faculty alike—not through remarkable academic achievements, but through simple acts of kindness and warmth. Liu Guolian, a security guard at the university’s library, has become an unexpected symbol of positivity and human connection, spreading joy and encouragement every day with his smile, greetings, and heartfelt words.
Liu Guolian’s journey to SCNU began in December of last year, when he relocated from his hometown in Chengde, in Hebei, to start a new chapter of his life. His role at SCNU as a security guard might seem ordinary at first glance, but it is his extraordinary approach to this work that has made him an unforgettable figure on the campus.
A Smile that Brings Warmth to the Campus
Every morning at seven o’clock, as the sun rises over the university, Liu can be seen standing at the entrance of the library, a welcoming smile on his face, and his hand raised in a cheerful greeting. His “Good morning! Welcome back!” is not just a casual formality—each word is imbued with genuine warmth and care, a small but meaningful gesture that has become a hallmark of his character. Liu’s infectious energy and sunny disposition have created an atmosphere where students feel valued, and where their day begins with an unexpected dose of kindness.
Liu’s presence at the entrance of the library has grown into a daily ritual for the university’s students, who eagerly respond to his greetings with smiles and waves. In fact, many students have even been known to stop for a brief chat, express their gratitude, or shake his hand in appreciation. Liu’s approach to his job is grounded in sincerity and respect, as he strives to make each individual feel recognized and cared for. Before they leave, he will offer a final word of caution: "Be careful in the rain on the road!"
