A security guard working in the library on the University Town campus of SCNU gained widespread attention on social media for his dedication to the work and his warm-heartedness, attracting more students to pay visits and spend time in the library.
Liu Guolian, a security guard who has been working in the library since last December, wrote an open letter to show his appreciation for the teachers and students and posted it on the library board. The letter resonated with many students and teachers and received many likes and shares online.
In the letter, he wrote that working at SCNU brought him great joy. He also likened the students and teachers to birds soaring freely to the wind, so full of vitality that it made him firmly believe that the future of the country would be promising.
An SCNU student shared Liu Guolian's letter on the Internet, which received many likes and triggered resonance among many teachers, students and alumni.
Students left comments sharing their impressions of the security guard, "This security guard is really nice. I feel like I can always see him standing at the entrance, greeting students. It's truly heartwarming!" Another student praised Liu Guolian for his energetic demeanour in a WeChat Moments post, "It is like being recharged when you walk into the library, and when you leave, he helps you replenish the energy you've consumed today."
Smiling, nodding, waving, and then greeting — this has probably become Liu Guolian's habit. Every day at the entrance to the library, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., from "Good morning! Welcome!" to "Goodbye! Enjoy your dinner", he stands sideways, guiding with both hands. With a big smile on his face, he waves high and greets every student and faculty member coming in and out.
He always gently reminds the readers not to bring food and drinks into the hall. When he notices that some students have irregular eating habits, he will gently advise them to "eat well and take care of themselves" . On rainy days, Liu stays by the entrance of the library. Even though he gets soaked by the heavy rain, he still holds the door and tells those leaving to "be careful on the road while it rains."
Liu Guolian greets the teachers and students of SCNU at the entrance to the library.
"By greeting and caring, I hope to pass on love and positive energy to all the students. I know that many students at SCNU will be teachers in the future. I hope they can pass their love to others in the future" Liu Guolian says. Students express their love to this kind security guard in return. At mealtimes, they share snacks with Liu. Some students even came to the library to share a birthday cake with him.
As Liu’s letter went viral, many students and netizens also praised his handwriting, impressed by his bold and vigorous strokes. Since he was young, Liu has practised calligraphy as a hobby. "I haven't had formal training; I just like to write whenever I have time," he says. It was to express his gratitude and respect for the teachers and students of SCNU that Liu specially handwrote that letter.
The handwritten letter, consisting of 115 characters, was rewritten five or six times over more than half a month until Liu was satisfied. "I hope to present the best spirit and appearance to the teachers and students through this handwritten letter," he added.
Growing up in Chengde, in Hebei province, the northeastern part of China, Liu Guolian dreamed of going to university. Now that he has been working at this vibrant university as a security guard, he feels he has realized this dream.
