From 23 to 24 July, a delegation from South China Normal University (SCNU), led by Wang Chunchao, Vice President of SCNU, attended the 2026 Annual Conference and Presidents’ Forum of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance (GHMUA) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Themed “Ten Years of Shared Endeavor, a Bay Area of Integrated Excellence,” the event marked the Alliance’s 10th anniversary and brought together nearly 200 representatives from member universities across the three regions. During the conference, SCNU was re-elected as a non-permanent member council institution and received an “Outstanding Professional Alliance” award.
The opening ceremony was attended by Zhang Jin, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges (Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs), Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China; Cai Ruolian, Secretary for the Education Bureau of Hong Kong; Zheng Jinpeng, Second-level Inspector of the Education and Youth Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR; Xu Shimin, Chief Inspector of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Ding Shaoxiong, Deputy Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR Government; and Xia Fangming, Second-level Inspector of the Hong Kong and Macao Work Office of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee. The conference centered on three major themes: industry-academia-research integration, a networked ecosystem for collaborative talent development, and aligning regional development with an international vision.

At the Presidents’ Forum, Wang Chunchao delivered a keynote speech and noted that SCNU has reached three pioneering milestones in advancing Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao higher education integration: it is the first university to set up campuses in Hong Kong and Macao; it established the Chinese mainland’s first “dual base” for professional development and exchange of Hong Kong and Macao teachers; and it founded the Teacher Education College of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area and the Greater Bay Area Teachers’ Federation as platforms for cross-regional professional development. He further expressed SCNU’s readiness to collaborate with peer Bay Area universities on talent cultivation, scientific research, social services and cultural heritage preservation, jointly forging a sustainable, high-quality roadmap for regional educational integration.
During the conference, SCNU was presented with a certificate of appreciation as an outgoing non-permanent member council institution and re-elected to serve as a non-permanent member council institution for the new term. In addition, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Primary & Secondary Schools STEAM Education, jointly founded by SCNU’s School of Information Technology in Education, The Education University of Hong Kong and the University of Macao, was named an “Outstanding Professional Alliance of 2025”.

To mark this milestone, the Alliance held an exhibition showcasing its decade-long achievements and released a commemorative video, highlighting the fruitful education and research cooperation platforms built by member universities across the Greater Bay Area. It also staged its first joint inter-university performance, featuring award-winning student groups from member institutions presenting songs, dances, instrumental performances and recitations that embody the dynamic cultural integration of the three regions. SCNU’s choral entry won the second prize. Performed by 37 faculty and student members from SCNU’s School of Music, the piece blends upbeat rhythms with jazz harmonies to demonstrate SCNU’s accomplishments in ensemble artistic practice and the vibrant spirit of its students.
