SCNU held opening ceremonies on it four campuses on September 12, to welcome the new cohort of over 15,000 students .
The main opening ceremony was held on the Shipai campus in Guangzhou, attended by all university leaders, representatives of professors, new students and faculty members, as well as broadcast live via WeChat.
Wang Hengyin, Secretary of the CPC Committee of SCNU, presented appointment letters to the representatives of class teachers, and presented copies of the book, Xi Jinping and College Students and A Draft History of South China Normal University, to the representatives of new students. Wang encouraged students to enhance their professional competence, pass down the spirit of SCNU, and dedicate themselves to serve the country so as to shoulder the great responsibilities of building China into a great country and advancing national rejuvenation.

Yang Zhongmin, president of SCNU, delivered a welcome speech to all the new students from China and international students from 24 different countries. He spoke about the university’s history, achievements made over the past 90 years, as well as its vision and goals. With a history of 92 years, SCNU has cultivated over 80% of famous teachers and principals in primary and secondary schools in Guangdong province, as well as over 70% of the total number of high school, primary school and kindergarten teachers in Macao, he said.
As SCNU boasts four campuses in three cities, with two in Guangzhou located near the Pearl River, the Foshan campus near Mount Shishan, the Shanwei campus near the sea, Yang set expectation for the students by comparing them to moutains, the sea and the river. He hoped that students will stay determined like a mountain as they study for the rise of the motherland and devote themselves to serving the country; have the capacity to pursue knowledge like the sea to become a multi-talented person; and develop the important character trait of perseverance as the ongoing river.

To promote the spirit of educators, an eye catching performance named “Passing Down the Torch of Teaching” was performed during opening ceremony for the first time. The performers were primary and middle school teachers who graduated from SCNU and their teachers at SCNU, who came up to the stage and shared stories of their dedication to the cause of education.

The other three ceremonies took place simultaneously at the University Town campus in Guangzhou, the Nanhai campus in Foshan and the Binhai campus in Shanwei. The ceremonies started with exciting music concerts and ended with the chant of the University Song.
