South China Normal University and the Guangzhou Laboratory jointly signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation framework agreement on Guangzhou International Bio Island on November 23.
At the signing ceremony, Academician Zhong Nanshan introduced the main research areas, operation mechanism and development plan of the Guangzhou Laboratory. Both sides have been cooperating closely in recent years and yielded initial results. Opportunities await for further cooperation in establishing joint research centers, sharing scientific research resources, joint training of talents, science education, and running schools.
Zhong showed his confidence and expectation for cooperation. He emphasized that the laboratory would take this agreement signing as an opportunity. It will accelerate the cooperation of various projects, promote industry-university-research interaction and innovative resources alignment, and contribute to the implementation of the strategy for invigorating China through science and education.

Wang Enke briefly introduced the reform and development of SCNU in recent years, as well as the basis for cooperation including talent training, teacher education, and scientific research. He added that the agreement would accelerate SCNU’s “Double First-Class” development. South China Normal University attaches great importance to this cooperation and will strive for specific cooperation projects on scientific research and talent cultivation.

Academician Xu Tao and vice president Yang Zhongmin signed the comprehensive strategic cooperation framework agreement on behalf of the Guangzhou Laboratory and South China Normal University respectively.

Guided by the major strategic needs of China and Guangdong province, both sides will further draw on their strengths, promote multidisciplinary integration and improve the ability to solve key scientific and technological problems. The cooperation will thus help tackle the stranglehold problems in key areas and promote the country's scientific innovation.

The Guangzhou Laboratory is the core scientific and technological force in respiratory diseases and their prevention and control, led by Academician Zhong Nanshan. The laboratory introduces and trains domestic and foreign well-known experts and young talents in the field of respiratory disease. It aims to build a high-level scientific team for conducting collaborative research. The Lab focuses of four spearpoints, viz. performance on the forefront of science and technology in the world, developing along with the economy, the major needs of the country, and people’s lives and health. It also aims to develop a large-scale comprehensive research base and source of original innovation with international influence.
Currently, SCNU and Guangzhou Laboratory carry out substantial research cooperation and jointly train students in the fields of digital microfluidic chips, epigenetic regulation of the blood system, early embryonic development and germ cell development, chromatin three-dimensional conformation and epigenetic regulation.
