11 SCNU students won five gold medals and two silver medals for the Guangdong team in the 2022 National Rowing Championships held in Lishui, in Zhejiang province from November 2 to November 6.
This was the highest-level rowing competition on the largest scale in China, with many high-level athletes, such as a world champion and an Asian champion, involved in the competition. In total, 751 athletes in 23 teams including the national team, Beijing team, Shanghai team, Zhejiang team, Guangdong team and other provincial teams competed in 31 events within five days.
Led by teacher Huang Xin of the School of Physical Education and Sport Science, students won first prizes in five events, namely, eight with coxswain (8+) men, four (4-) men, quadruple sculls (4x) men, double sculls (2x) men, and eight with coxswain (8+) women. On top of that, two second prizes were also won in four (4-) women and pair (2-) men respectively.

Talking about students’ good performances, coach Huang Xin said, "this championship is of high standard. Though faced with strong opponents, SCNU students showed their fearlessness. They even became braver after each fight. And they got the excellent scores with their strong will power.”

Liu Wancheng, who won the first prize in the competition eight with coxswain (8+) men and second prize in pair (2-) men, said that they overcame so many difficulties and paid greater efforts through a year’s training as they failed to reach the final of the Pair 2-, and only won the second place at the Eight 8+ last year. “We made up for last year’s regret this time. I believe as long as we hold our dreams, find our own way and trust ourselves, we can achieve our goals,” he added.

Yu Yunan, first-prize winner in the eight with coxswain (8+) women, was pleased with her performance. “The tedious training was difficult to keep it up, but I’m really happy when I see my progress and accomplishment, which motivate me to fight for my goals towards the National Games. I do hope we can improve every day.”

Hosted by Water Sports Management Center of General Administration of Sport of China, the Chinese Rowing Association (CRA), the Sport Bureau of Zhejiang province and the People’s Government of Lishui, the 2022 National Rowing Championships were held at the Water Sports Management Center of Zhejiang province and the Sports Development Service Center of Lishui.
