The length of the bridge is about 55 kilometers, spanning the Lingding Channel, connecting Hong Kong to the east and Zhuhai and Macau to the west. It is a super project combining a bridge, island and tunnel.
Among the members of the construction team, there is an outstanding alumnus of SCNU. His name is Wei Dongqing, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and executive director of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Administration.
Full dedication to the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge
Wei Dongqing, graduated with a master in science of philosophy from SCNU in 1988, and then worked at the institutional reform office of Guangdong provincial people's government for a few years. In 1994, he studied in the department of economics of Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and was a visiting scholar at the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
In addition to his solid academic background, Wei Dongqing also has rich working experience. He was deputy Director of the Macroeconomic Regulation Department of the Guangdong Provincial Reform Commission in 1997, deputy director of the Guangdong Provincial Development Planning Commission and deputy director of the Information Center in 2000. In 2009, he served as director of the Economic Research Institute of Guangdong Industrial Development Research Institute. He has served as the deputy secretary and chief administrative officer of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Administration since August 2010.
According to Wei Dongqing, the contruction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was started on 15 December 2009, with the construction was of Zhuhai port, while the main project started on New Year's Day in 2011. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Administration was jointly established by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government, the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the government of the Macao Special Administrative Region in 2010. As the project's legal entity, these three parties share responsibility for the early stage of construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and will represent the tripartite government to operate the bridge in the future.
As soon as the administration was established, Wei Dongqing devoted himself to the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. “From the date of taking office on 13 August 2010 till today was a total of 2993 days. I dedicated the best time of my life, from the age of forty to fifty, to the construction of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge,”Wei Dongqing said with emotion. In these 2993 days, Wei Dongqing did the only thing–working with the team to build the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge into a world-renowned and superb project.
Gratitude to SCNU
This year is of great significance to Wei Dongqing. Thirty years has passed since he studied for a master's degree in Philosophy of Science at SCNU from 1985 till 1988. This year also marks the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up.
After graduation, Wei Dongqing was engaged in reform work and served in the local government. "I didn't expect to work in the science and engineering field which I studied eight years ago. The professional knowledge of science and technology which I acquired at SCNU was applied in the process of constructing of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, I am very pleased to report to my alma mater." This year coincides with the 85th anniversary of SCNU. All students from SCNU are outstanding.
"I am 55 years old this year. It is my dream to deliver knowledge about the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge to people.” He called it "Returning Education". In early July of this year, in the innovation and entrepreneurship exchange activity themed by "The Love to China of students in Guangdong and Taiwan”, hundreds of teachers and students from Cantonese and Taiwanese universities conducted an eight-day event in Guangdong province. One of the activities was to visit the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, although it had not yet been officially opened to traffic. Wei Dongqing's introduction of the bridge impressed the teachers and students on both sides.
