On October 8, Professor McConson, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, honorary Dean of the School of Fisheries, at the Ocean University of China, and a member of the International Academic Committee on Fish Nutrition, was hired at the Shipai campus of South China Normal University. Zhu Kongjun, secretary of the party committee, Nie Ruihua, director of the Science and Technology Department, Feng Qili, dean of the College of Life Sciences, Huang Rongxiao, secretary of the party committee of the college and nearly 200 teachers and students from the College of Life Sciences attended the ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by vice president Shen Wenhuai.
At the employment ceremony, Shen introduced academician McConson's academic experience and outstanding contributions to aquaculture. Shen Wenhuai pointed out that academician McConson's participation in the development of the school, not only can better promote the construction of our school's disciplines, personnel training and scientific research, and other aspects of work, but also plays a huge role in guiding our school's talent team construction.
Subsequently, Zhu Kongjun awarded the academician certificate to him. Zhu emphasized that biology and aquaculture are the traditional dominant disciplines of the Chinese Teachers' College and one of the two major disciplines to be supported in the future high-level university construction. Under this background, the employment of McCoson as a double-appointed academician to our university, and the preparation to set up the Academy of Modern Aquaculture Science and Engineering will significantly improve the construction level of our school's aquatic disciplines, promote the development of the entire biological disciplines, build a higher and greater platform, and accelerate the construction of high-level disciplines. Zhu also said that the school will fully support academicians to carry out their work, do a good job of service guarantee, and provide a good working and living environment for academicians and their teams.
Academician McConson expressed his privilege to join South China Normal University and made a concise summary and outlook on the history and stages of aquatic research in China over the past 40 years. At the same time, he also expressed his expectation about working in China.
Following a brief acceptance ceremony, academician McConson gave an academic lecture entitled "Mechanisms regulating the efficient use of feed proteins by fish". He believes that China's 3,000-year aquatic history can be divided into four stages, the first three stages of aquaculture exposed China's excessive pursuit of output and scale, ignoring the quality and environment and the sustainable development of aquaculture. In this regard, he proposed to take the best effect as an indicator, make moderate use of resources and focus on sustainable development, link the food safety depth. At the same time, McConson also noticed that feedstuff may cause maladjustment to fish and the environment, pointed out that there is still a lot of work to be done in feedstuff research, and expressed his strong commitment to the study.
At the end of the report, academician McConson also exchanged views with scientific researchers and graduate students.
