From November 20 to 28, a delegation led by Wang Binwei, secretary of the CPC Party Committee of SCNU, visited the Confucius Institute at the University of Réunion in France, Makerere University and the Civil Service College Uganda in the Republic of Uganda to promote educational cooperation and academic exchange. An awarding ceremony of the first overseas "Alumni Home" of SCNU was also held in Uganda during the visit.

The delegation made its first stop at the Confucius Institute of Réunion and had a meeting with Ms. Marjolaine Roche, executive head of the institute. Wang Binwei said great progress have been made since the establishment of the Confucius Institute. Next step, both sides should draw on past experience and have further discussion on the future development of the organization.

The delegation also visited two Chinese associations in the Réunion, namely, the Association QILIN and Temple CHANE, and exchanged views with Marc Lu Yun, president of the Association QILIN, and other representatives of the associations, and learnt about the urgent demand of local Chinese learning Chinese language along with Chinese culture. They enjoyed a Shanxi drum performance and lion dance performed by members of the Association QILIN. What's more, the delegation also went to the Chinese language courses in the Juliette Dodu Middle School and the Bellepierre Secondary School and introduced information about admission and enrollment of SCNU to local teachers and students.

Later, the delegation moved on to the Republic of Uganda. They met with Uganda's third deputy Prime Minister Rukia Nakadama Isanga at the Ugandan Parliament Building and briefed him about the history, characteristics and vision of SCNU. Minister Nakadama hoped that more practical educational cooperation and exchange in education will be carried out between the two countries in the future.

At the invitation of Minister Nakadama, the delegation also visited the Civil Service College Uganda (CSCU) and had conversations with the commissioner of CSCU Savia N. Mugwanya, along with her team. Mugwanya hoped to build connection with Chinese universities to learn about their success practice. Wang Binwei said SCNU looks forward to strengthening cooperation and exchange with CSCU in civil servants training, policy research and analysis. Witnessed by Minister Nakadama Isanga, Wang Binwei and Ms Mugwanya jointly signed a cooperation memorandum between SCNU and CSCU. This is the first time CSCU has established a cooperative relation with a Chinese university. Mula Anthony, private secretary of the vice president of Uganda, also participated in the meeting as designated representative.

During the visit to Makerere University - one of the most prestigious English teaching universities in Africa, the delegation met with Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, vice chancellor of the university and professor Buyinza Mukadasi, acting deputy vice chancellor in charge of academic affairs, as well as other departments and faculties representatives. Wang Binwei said SCNU has attached great importance to the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, and looks forward to making contributions to the high-quality economic development of China and Uganda by carrying out practical educational cooperation.

Barnabas expressed the hope of establishing collaboration in economic management, Chinese language teaching and culture, new energy technology as well as innovation and entrepreneurship. The two sides also exchanged views on high-level talent cultivation, scientific research cooperation, tutor appointment, and reached preliminary consensus on future collaboration. Before the end of meeting, Professor Nawangwe presented a cooperation memorandum of Makerere University to South China Normal University.

Apart from universities, the delegation also visited Consul General Chen Xiaolei and Vice Consul General Wang Li at Chinese Consulate General in Saint-Denis, Réunion, as well as Fan Xuecheng, Minister Counselor of Chinese Embassy in Uganda. Wang Binwei introduced them the Confucius Institute of Réunion and the situation of alumni enterprises. They all expressed support for SCNU to fully leverage its strengths and further carry out educational exchanges and cooperation with universities in the region.

What's more, Wang Binwei and his delegation visited Uganda-based alumni enterprise - the Orion Transformers & Electrics Ltd to promote school-enterprise cooperation, and awarded SCNU's first overseas "Alumni Home" to the company. He hoped that the "Alumni Home" could serve as a bridge of strengthening connections between SCNU alumni in Uganda and their alma mater and create a platform for SCNUers to reach out to others and spread the Chinese culture and tell their stories.

This visit marks the first university-level delegation to Uganda, which has secured a number of cooperative intentions in talent cultivation, leadership improvement, cooperation in science, technology and innovation, as well as cultural exchange between the two countries.
