The 2024 International Student Gala "Charming Guangdong, Living My Dreams" was held at the University Town campus on November 7. More than 600 international students from over 40 countries attended to promote intercultural exchange and integration through various cultural performances.

Yuan Baocheng, vice chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the Guangdong Public Diplomacy Association, said that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China as well as the CPPCC. The "Charming Guangdong, Living My Dreams" International Student Gala serves as the kick-off ceremony for the series of events of the "2024 Guangdong Public Diplomacy Week", which will be held by the Guangdong Public Diplomacy Association.
Yuan stressed the need to promote the understanding and recognition of the Global Civilization Initiative put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-Level Meeting. He further hoped that international students in Guangdong can cherish the campus time, increase mutual understanding through mutual learning, and not only acquire knowledge, but also build friendships. He also hoped that they can be ambassadors to sow the seeds of friendship and connect people and cultures, making their contribution to the exchange and cooperation between Guangdong and the rest of the world, the Belt and Road Initiative and the building of a community of a shared future for mankind.

Wang Binwei, secretary of the CPC SCNU Committee, said that SCNU has attached great importance to the education of international students and the implementation of the "Studying at SCNU" brand plan for international students. At present, SCNU has more than 800 international students and has established cultural exchange platforms for students at home and abroad, including the "International Cultural Festival" and "European Culture Festival", Wang added.
Wang further hoped that international students can appreciate the unique charm and the beauty of integrating different cultures, and serve as young messengers to promote exchange and mutually beneficial cooperation between their home countries and China.
International students give different kinds of performances.
At the performance, international students from SCNU and other eight universities including Sun Yat-sen University, South China University of Technology, Jinan University, South China Agricultural University and Shenzhen University, presented performances of martial arts, singing, dance, recitation and costume display under the theme of "Prosperity in Diversity, Playing the Music of Cultural Exchange and Integration". The performances showcased the diverse cultural backgrounds of the international students, their passion and identity with Chinese culture, and their expectation to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
In the end, three performances from South China Normal University, Jinan University, and Shenzhen University won first prizes, while two programs of SCNU, namely, Rhythm of Martial Arts, Soul of Tai Chi and Orchid Pavilion Preface, won the first and second prizes, respectively.

"International students presenting artistic performances with Chinese characteristics is a way of cross-cultural exchange. We're learning through the exchange, and by integrating our country's cultural elements with Chinese culture. Thus, we more fully feel the charm of traditional Chinese culture," said Fan Yuxia, a performer in Orchid Pavilion Preface and a Vietnamese student studying for the Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) at SCNU.
The International Students Gala flag was also handed over by SCNU to the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine (GZUCM) at the end of the gala; next year's event will be held at there.

Representatives from the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Foreign Affairs Office of the Guangdong Provincial Government, universities and major media outlets in Guangdong attended the event.

Hosted by Guangdong Public Diplomacy Association, the Guangdong People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and the Guangdong Education Association for International Exchange, the event was organized by SCNU and Guangdong Association for International Education Management. It has been held for seven editions since its inception.
