From June 30 to July 6, a delegation of South China Normal University, led by Yang Zhongmin, president of SCNU, visited Belgium and the Netherlands to promote educational cooperation and academic exchange.
The delegation visited Ghent University (UGent), the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Kingdom of Belgium, the University of Groningen, and the Eindhoven University of Technology. They also held job fairs in the two countries to attract overseas talents, introducing SCNU's running, development strategy and talent policy.
At the meeting at Ghent University in Belgium, Yang introduced SCNU's school-running characteristics and external exchange and hoped that the two universities could expand wider, deeper and higher-quality cooperation based on the joint laboratory of liquid crystal and optoelectronic devices. The delegation also visited the joint laboratory and communicated with the head of the lab.
Luc Taerwe, director of the East Asia Platform, said the two universities have conducted effective scientific research and joint training of students since the cooperation agreement was signed in 2018. The two universities also exchanged ideas and reached a consensus on student exchange, scientific research cooperation, and mutual appointment of teachers in physics, computer science, digital economy and other disciplines.

The delegation also visited the Chinese Embassy in Belgium and had a meeting with Li Hui, the counsellor of the education section of the Chinese Embassy in Belgium. Yang introduced the university's running and cooperation with Belgium and indicated that SCNU would expand cooperation with Belgian universities in international laboratories, talent cultivation and educational exchange. It is expected to make contributions to the high-quality development of education between China and Belgium.
Li mentioned that 2024 marked the 10th anniversary of the Sino-Belgian all-round partnership of friendship and cooperation and the fruitful exchange between SCNU and Ghent University deserves recognition. Chinese Embassy in Belgium will support the educational exchange between the two sides.
At the University of Groningen (UG), the delegation met with Jacquelien Scherpen, the Rector of UG, Joost Frenken, dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Bernard L. Feringa, a 2016 Nobel Prize winner, and an academician of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
Yang introduced the university's running and foreign exchange in recent years and appreciated Bernard L. Feringa for his contributions to exchange programs between the two sides. He anticipated that the two universities would deepen their cooperation in building the international cooperation and research platform, academic communication, and joint talent training.
Jacquelien Scherpen expressed a warm welcome to the delegation. She introduced the basic information about the University of Groningen and expressed her wish to work together with SCNU and strengthen the friendship. The two sides extended both the cooperation framework agreement and the international laboratory joint building agreement. The delegation also visited the Feringa Building, the new building for the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen.

At the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Yang communicated with Dirk Broer, an academician of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences a distinguished Professor at the South China Academy of Advanced Optoelectronics of SCNU. Yang indicated that SCNU would promote further cooperation with TU/e in science research. Dirk Broer expressed his willingness to cooperate with SCNU in more advanced fields. The delegation also listened to reports conducted by professors Yvonne de Korts, Karin Smolders, Hans Wyss, Stijn Kragt and others.
