Professor Dirk J. Broer was appointed as a distinguished professor at SCNU in 2013. He has been dedicated to innovation and industrialization in the field of liquid crystals for over 40 years.
Professor Broer cultivated internationalized research teams in SCNU and assisted them in scientific research and industrialization achievements. Besides, he promoted the development of the SCNU-TUE Joint Lab of Devices Integrated Responsive Materials (DIRM). He promoted cooperation and exchange of scientific and technological innovation between Chinese and foreign governments, as well as between universities and enterprises, in the field of advanced materials.

Professor Bernard Lucas Feringa was the winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was appointed as an Honorary Professor at SCNU in 2017. Besides, he was the foreign director of the SCNU-UG International Joint Laboratory of Molecular Science and Displays (MSD) established in 2018.
Professor Feringa established student research teams at SCNU and fostered the joint education of postgraduate students in China and the Netherlands. He published important research results in cooperation with Chinese scholars and thus contributed to China's global influence in molecular machines and intelligent materials.
In addition, he promoted the scientific and technological cooperation between China and the Netherlands in chemistry studies. With his assistance, several major international cooperation projects were implemented, such as the National Key Research and Development (R&D) Program — Intergovernmental Cooperation in International Science and Technology and Innovation, and the plan for international sci-tech cooperation zones in Guangdong province.
Since 2015, SCNU has established international joint research laboratories with Eindhoven University of Technology and the University of Groningen. With the support and help of Professor Broer and Professor Feringa, the laboratories cultivated a team of internationalized talents. Each team made groundbreaking achievements with proprietary intellectual property rights for China, in the fields of color video electronic paper, intelligent control devices, molecular machines, and intelligent materials, and so on. Moreover, the laboratories were approved by the National Center for International Research on Green Optoelectronics. The approval marked SCNU's first national base for science and technology and promoted the further internationalization of SCNU.
