"Southeast Asia Forum" is held from 13-14 November 2021.

With the theme of “Regional Cooperation and Collaborative Development against the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) background”, the aim of this conference was to think about and anticipate the deep impact of RCEP on the international political and economic pattern and the development trends in RCEP, to analyze the opportunities and challenges of some aspects like the cross-regional economic and trade cooperation, educational and cultural exchange, and cooperation in areas of industry-university-research, etc., and to discuss some focused multilateral agreements on cooperation between China and ASEAN against the RCEP background so as to build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.

Hosted by Wu Jian, vice president of SCNU and director of Center for Southeast Asian Studies, the opening ceremony began on November 13. Wang Enke, president of SCNU, attended the opening ceremony and delivered an opening address.

President Wang Enke said “On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of dialogue relations between China and ASEAN, it is timely and necessary for SCNU to hold this forum which will exert a far-reaching influence on the follow-up cooperation and development between China and Southeast Asia.”

He said that SCNU attaches great importance to international education exchange and cooperation in the region, and has signed cooperative education agreements with five universities in five southeast Asian countries. Founded in 2017, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies has set up 8 overseas research bases in 7 Southeast Asian countries and a graduate teaching center in Penang, Malaysia, built a think tank on foreign affairs together with the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Guangdong province and conducted exchange and cooperation with the Consulate General of various Southeast Asian countries in Guangzhou, Chinese and local enterprises in the region.

Another important highlight of the Forum was the signing ceremony of the establishment of the School of Chinese Language Teacher Education for Southeast Asia between the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education and SCNU, which was also held during the conference. The establishment of the school aims to strengthen the interdisciplinary development of "Southeast Asian Studies", deepen and integrate the development in talents training and think tank consulting services, and help build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.

A number of forums took place, including “Southeast Asia and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of in the Context of RCEP: Review of nation or region”, “Culture of Southeast Asia from the Perspective of Civilizations Mutual Learning and History” and so on.

RCEP is short for Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which unifies the preexisting bilateral agreements between the 10-member ASEAN and five of its major trade partners, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). It was signed on 15 November 2020, and is the world' s largest free trade agreement.

Since the establishment of the Southeast Asia Research Center of South China Normal University in 2017, the annual International Conference of the Southeast Asia Forum with wide coverage and influence has become an important platform to promote professional research, exchange and cooperation between countries and regions as well has helped SCNU build its international conference brand for national and regional research think tanks.
