The Social Sciences Review (general social sciences) rating of SCNU ranks among the top 1% of ESI for the first time, according to the latest data from Essential Science Indicators (ESI) released by Thomson Reuters released on September 11.
Up to now, seven subjects are among the top 1% of ESI, providing a solid basis for the title "Double first-class" and "High Quality University". Based on the analysis of the source of literature, the total number of SCNU's articles retrieved by the keyword "Social Sciences Review" is 263 and they have been cited 1,626 times in total, with an average cited rate of 6.18 per article.
The latest progress made in the ranking marks an important breakthrough in the development of subjects related to social science, and it also raises SCNU's influence on humanistic and social science internationally.
In recent years, SCNU paid much attention to the development of humanistic and social science's subjects and promoted their development and reformation with top down scheme, which has led to favorable results.
First, the scheme promoted the development of several scientific research platforms which have great influence on economic and social transformation and upgrading. Up to now, there are 39 social science research platforms that are at or above the provincial or ministerial level, compared with 11 during the first stage of "High Quality University" development, and they have published a series of high-quality research findings.
Second, led by high-level scientific research projects, philosophy and social science research gained integral improvement and increased the ability to undertake major national projects. Since 2017, 29 key projects of SCNU have been approved by the National Social Science Fund, ranking third among universities and the fourth among normal universities in the whole country.
Third, SCNU supports original works on philosophy and social science, thus producing a number of profound and original academic publications with high academic value. In 2020, 17 academic publications were to be awarded the 8th Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award of Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education (Humanities and Social Sciences). Among them, 3 publications won the first prize, ranking first in Guangdong Province and the eleventh among universities nationwide.
ESI is a prevailing tool worldwide which is used to evaluate the international academic standard and the influence of colleges and universities, academic institutions and countries or regions. Generally, the subjects among the first 1% of ESI are considered as internationally high standard subjects.
The Social Sciences Review encompasses all the scientific achievements in subjects related to social science in a university, and its results reflect the integral level of liberal art in a university.
