"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."
— Henry David Thoreau
Liu Guolian, a dedicated and warm-hearted security guard at South China Normal University (SCNU), has become an emblem of kindness and positivity within the campus community. Since joining the university in December 2023, Liu has worked tirelessly to create an environment of warmth and support for both students and faculty alike. Liu is, in many ways, a true reflection of Thoreau's message on living deliberately and embracing life with sincerity. His story, however, is not one of high-profile achievements, but of quiet dedication, sincerity, and the power of simple human connection.
A portrait of Liu
Earlier this year, Liu became an Internet sensation after a photo of a handwritten letter he sent to his colleagues and students went viral. The letter, filled with elegant calligraphy and heartfelt words, expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to work with such talented and passionate individuals. In his message, Liu shared his appreciation for being part of SCNU, writing, "Being able to work alongside you fills my heart with joy and gives me hope for the future of our country. May we not waste our youth; let the clouds soar as we do. This is the spirit I see in you, and I am proud to share this bond as a fellow Chinese."
The letter's emotional depth and calligraphic beauty moved many who read it. The phrase "Youth, do not squander it" resonated deeply with the SCNU community, reminding them of the value of every moment. One reader commented, "At first, I was surprised by the writer's enthusiasm, thinking such sincerity was rare. But then I remembered that this is the purest and most original connection between people — one that we often forget in today's busy world." Liu's commitment and hospitality remind me of Mr. Keating from Dead Poets Society and his timeless call for "Carpe Diem" — seize the day. Like Keating, Liu's passion for life and genuine care for others inspire those around him to face reality with courage and embrace each moment with enthusiasm. His daily encouragement, whether through gentle reminders to students to take care of themselves or his warm, sincere greetings, reflects a philosophy of cherishing life and the connections we form with others. Liu's actions urge us, much like Keating's words, not to let the days slip by without embracing the people around us.
Liu's daily presence at the library gate has also become a symbol of his unwavering commitment. From 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, he stands by the entrance, greeting everyone with a broad smile and a friendly wave. His greeting, "Good morning! Welcome home!" has become a familiar and comforting start to many students’ and faculty members' days. His dedication to creating a welcoming atmosphere has made him a beloved figure on campus. Students, in turn, reciprocate his kindness with their own smiles and friendly gestures, often shaking his hand or stopping to chat for a moment.
But behind this warm smile is a man who approaches his work with sincerity and care. Liu's role as a security guard goes beyond enforcing rules; he brings a sense of compassion to his duties. For instance, when students mistakenly bring food or drinks into the library, Liu gently reminds them of the policy, always opting for a kind and non-confrontational approach. His calm demeanor and respectful attitude make it easy for students to understand and comply without feeling reprimanded. Liu's warm interactions with the students are not just about maintaining order but about fostering a culture of respect and understanding.
Liu's attentiveness is evident even in the smallest details. When he sees students eating irregularly, he often reminds them, "Make sure to eat on time, and take care of your stomach!" This simple concern for others' well-being speaks volumes about his character. On rainy days, Liu remains steadfast at his post, even when the heavy downpour leaves him drenched, always opening and closing the gate for students as they come and go. Before they leave, he kindly reminds them, "Be careful on the road in the rain." This level of care and dedication has not gone unnoticed by the students, many of whom have expressed their admiration for his thoughtfulness.
Liu Guolian at Work
In his personal life, Liu finds solace in practicing calligraphy. His passion for the art is not just a hobby, but a reflection of his desire to continually improve himself and express his gratitude toward others. After writing the letter that went viral, Liu sought advice from a colleague skilled in calligraphy to ensure that his handwriting was perfect. He rewrote the letter, carefully comparing it to his colleague's work, until he was satisfied that it truly represented his heart's intentions. This attention to detail and drive for excellence mirror his approach to all aspects of his life.
In return for his kindness, Liu has been showered with affection from the students. At lunchtime, some students, unwilling to let him go hungry, insist on giving him snacks. On his birthday, one student even brought him a birthday cake to share. These gestures of kindness have deeply touched Liu, bringing him to tears. He often reflects on how fortunate he is to have such meaningful connections with the students, saying, "I hope I can continue in this job for as long as I can. The love and care I receive from the students make everything worthwhile."
Liu's journey to SCNU was not an easy one. Originally from Chengde, in Hebei province, he made several stops along the way before finding his place at the university in the south. His encounter with the hardworking, optimistic students of SCNU inspired him to reciprocate that energy by dedicating himself fully to his role. He sees his work not as just a job, but as an opportunity to contribute to the university's atmosphere of positivity and to help the students grow alongside him. As a Communist Party member, Liu carries with him a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to the welfare of others, embodying the values of service, integrity, and selflessness.
Today, Liu's story is one of many that remind us of the power of simple acts of kindness. His consistent efforts to create an atmosphere of warmth and care have not only transformed the daily lives of those around him, but they have also inspired others to follow his example. Liu's actions remind us that in a world that often seems to value speed and efficiency over personal connection, it is the small, sincere gestures that make all the difference. His story is a testament to the power of kindness and how it can ripple outward, touching the hearts of all who encounter it.
