The northern part of Guangdong is a mountainous area with scarce teaching resources and hard living conditions. Few young teachers are willing to work there.
However, geography teacher Deng Huayu chose to leave the Pearl River Delta region for the mountainous area of northern Guangdong and has been there for 7 years, with impressive teaching achievements.
Deng Huayu graduated from the School of Geography of SCNU in 2017. She turned down the opportunity to work at the university and decided to return to work in the mountainous areas.
Deng Huayu, a geography teacher in the northern mountainous area of Guangdong.
The first problem Deng Huayu faced was that the students had a very weak foundation in learning. In order to help the students learn better, Deng HuaYu took her teaching work seriously and prepared every class meticulously.
She said that it may be very simple to just teach a class, but it is an art to teach a good class. Therefore, Deng Huayu constantly researches new teaching skills and methods. The geography examination scores of students taught by her always rank among the best. She has also gained the title of outstanding teacher and head teacher many times.
Deng Huayu devotes herself to teaching and giving excellent classes.
Deng Huayu not only takes her teaching responsibilities seriously, but also pays close attention to caring for her students, making them feel happy and comfortable. In her school, all students come from poor families in the mountains areas. They often encounter financial problems, and Deng Huayu is always ready to offer them a helping hand with that.
In 2020, one of her students lost her mother suddenly due to an illness, leaving her and her sister orphaned. After hearing her stories, Deng Huayu closely cared for her mental health and communicated with her through social media in order to calm her fear, anxiety, and helplessness. Furthermore, Deng Huayu sought help from social institutions to cover her three-year tuition fees.
Deng Huayu not only cares about students' daily life, but also works hard for their future and dreams. In 2020, China started a program that can help students enter universities, making students enter universities easily to a certain extent. Deng Huayu found it a rare opportunity for students, so she explained it to them in details and encouraged students to sign up. Finally, two of them successfully were qualified for undergraduate study in 2023. In her county, Deng Huayu’s students were among the first to sign up for the program.
Before she made the decision, Deng Huayu had also wavered. After all, considering personal development and resource platforms, the economically developed regions of the Pearl River Delta are indeed the top choice. But all these thoughts changed after she began to teach in the mountainous areas. During her internship, she found that there was a shortage of teachers in the mountainous areas. Sometimes geography teachers were even replaced by other major teachers temporarily. In 2017, Deng Huayu decided to return to her hometown in the northern mountainous area of Guangdong to become a high school geography teacher, walking in this way to pursue her personal value.
"It's worthy to dedicate my youth to every place that needs me!" Deng Huayu says. From the initial germination of her dream, to becoming an outstanding teacher, Deng Huayu has lived up to her educational aspirations with concrete actions. She uses youth as her pen and dedication as her ink, sowing the seeds of knowledge in the fertile soil of rural areas and supporting the hopes and futures of children in her hometown.
Deeply engaged in a teaching career in the mountains, Deng Huayu gives students in her hometown a possibility of a brighter future.
