Hou Jianxiong, a 1985 alumnus of the Department of Political Science of SCNU, has become a witness, participant, beneficiary and contributor to the Reform and Opening up with his outstanding career achievements and profound patriotism. He has made remarkable achievements in the field of business, and promoted international production capacity cooperation under the "Belt and Road" initiative with the wisdom and practice of a Confucian businessmen.
As the chairman of the Guangdong Shineng Power Equipment Group, an expert in major administrative decision-making of the People's Government of Guangdong Province, and an overseas member of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Mr. Hou Jianxiong is an experienced participant in the Belt and Road. He has followed a path that has taken him from the countryside to the university, from the institution to the state-owned enterprises, and from the domestic to overseas. In each of these transitions, he has always been guided by his heart's desire and the prevailing trends of the times.

In 1981, Hou Jianxiong was admitted to the Department of Political Science at SCNU, being regarded as an outstanding figure among adolescents in the mountainous regions of northern Guangdong. "To me, SCNU is sacred!" SCNU, for Hou Jianxiong, is a stage for realizing dreams. During his four years at SCNU, he not only won the title "merit student" for four consecutive years with his diligent study and active attitude, but also held various positions in the Student Union, and became a member of the Communist Party. Upon graduation, he was selected by the Provincial Discipline Inspection Committee and became the only fresh graduate of SCNU who was directly assigned to work in the provincial party committee.
During his eight years working in the provincial party committee, Hou Jianxiong's foresight and sagacity and strategic consciousness have been well cultivated. After returning from training in a grass-roots unit, he understood the meaning of engaging in business practice as stated in Comrade Deng Xiaoping’s Southern Tour Talks in a timely and acute manner. In 1993, he made a surprising decision --- he gave up a promising career to join the Guangdong Tianmao Group and participated in the preparation and management of Guangzhou Tianhecheng. In English known as Teem Plaza it is regarded as the first truly modern integrated shopping center in Guangzhou, and the first in China. This choice marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey from career to business.

Experiences and harvest the institution and state-owned enterprise for Hou Jianxiong’s career has laid a firm foundation for its far-reaching future, which has also contributed to his strong confidence in achieving his own value. Basing on his keen insight into the national policy, Hou founded Guangdong Shineng Electric Equipment Group. In 2000, he embarked on the path of international development. The Shineng Group, started from the transfer of domestic surplus power generation equipment and gradually developed into a group company with diversified development in various businesses such as power equipment production and sales, power plant investment, construction and operation, foreign trade, and foreign engineering contracting. In the countries along the "Belt and Road", especially in the African market, Shineng Group has promoted international production capacity collaboration through investment and cooperation, setting a benchmark for China-Africa economic and trade collaboration. Hou Jianxiong's international vision and strategic thinking make him a model for Chinese entrepreneurs.

As a splendid private entrepreneur, Hou Jianxiong's work experience in the institution has made him known as the "Confucian businessman". He has always maintained the habit of learning, thinking, researching, which formed his unique insight. His suggestions have been adopted by higher authorities many times, and he has shared his thoughts at many local and international conferences. For example, in December 2023, at symposium between Cantonese businessmen and the governor, Hou Jianxiong proposed "stabilization, preservation and expansion" (stabilizing the Southeast Asian market, preserving the European and American markets, and expanding the African market) on how to do a good job of "five-foreign linkage" in Guangdong in 2024, was highly affirmed by Governor Wang Weizhong.
In addition to hard work, Hou Jianxiong actively participates in various public affairs, and contributes to the country with his years of practical experience and innovative thinking on the front line of overseas economic and trade activities. He is also enthusiastic about social welfare and charity, supporting poverty alleviation and rural revitalization, and donating money and materials to African countries to fight against epidemics and disaster relief. On the 90th anniversary of SCNU, Hou Jianxiong set up the "Shi Neng" scholarship in the School of Politics and Administration to encourage SCNU students to study diligently and serve the country. His patriotism has also influenced his children. His eldest son Hou Zhongxuan, and his youngest son Hou Zheyuan are involved in public welfare and charitable causes in their own way.

Hou Jianxiong told SCNU students, "In my opinion, the world is very big. For those who do not go out, home is the world. While for those who go out, the world is home. You youngsters grow in a good era. Harbor a dream. Be down to earth, and walk with the times. Synchronize with the country, and resonate with history!"
Hou Jianxiong's story is a journey full of challenges and opportunities. His life experience is not only a legend of personal struggle but also a vivid embodiment of reform and opening up spirit. As a distinguished alumnus of SCNU, Hou Jianxiong will continue to inspire generations of SCNU students to pursue their dreams and move forward bravely.
