People cannot live without food, and the canteens at South China Normal University, which nourish its students and lecturers, are the treasure in and beyond SCNU. Each individual has his preferential taste, which can almost be satisfied at the canteens of SCNU.

Food supplied at the canteen of SCNU

Various types of food provided in the canteen and the traditional Cantonese specialties account for the major part. The sour and sweet pork, with the tenderloin wrapped in starch and fried into golden crisp, is extremely welcome among students and lecturers. Other Cantonese cuisine supplied at the canteen such as pot rice, plain boiled chicken, barbecued pork in honey and Siu Mei also enjoy their reputation and popularity.

Apart from the Cantonese cuisine, the canteens at SCNU are also home to cuisines from nearly all around China. The Shanxi style sliced noodles supplied at the canteen are available in both north and south style. At the supply window of , sliced beef, dotted with green coriander and covered with bright red oil mixed with sesame, is capable of making the mouth water. Besides, to cater to the eating habits of Muslims, there is also a Muslim canteen affiliated to the main canteen.

The creators of the delicious cuisine are those who work diligently behind the supply window. Zeng Fu, the chef in charge of the food-on-demand area on the first and second floor of the canteen named Taoyuan, said he has been working in the canteen for 31 years. The Taoyuan canteen introduces new dishes every month or so, updating them according to the season and public taste, and the seasonal vegetables in particular.

Zeng Fu, the chef working at the canteen named Taoyuan

"What the students need is what we should provide, and what the students think is right is what we should insist on." Zeng said. Thus, he welcomes the suggestions on the improvement of the canteen from lecturers and students so that the canteen could provide all the lecturers and students with better service.

Students of SCNU enjoy their lunch at the canteen

Li, a student, says that all his roommates are fond of the pot rice provided at the canteen and it is the best choice in winter in particular. Andy, a student from the Czech Republic, a fan of Cantonese cuisine, laughs and says, "I have dinner at the canteen nearly every day, and I am crazy about the sour and sweet pork."

Eleanor, a student from Xinjiang province, notes that she accidentally found the flavour of Nang, a traditional Xinjiang crusty pancake provided in canteen was in accordance with that made by her mother. Such fresh and delicious taste was capable of comforting her nostalgia.

Here's a guide to canteens at the Shipai campus. Three dining halls including Taoyuan, Qinyuan, Yongyuan and a gourmet court are at your option. You can start your day with a delicious breakfast at Yongyuan from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. After class, go to Qinyuan for a big lunch, which is available from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Dinner is usually offered from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
