On December 13, South China Normal University hosted a high-end forum on the cultivation of distinguished foreign language teachers, which brought together over 100 scholars and educators from 30 universities and teaching-research institutions in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area and Chinese mainland to explore the transformation trends of foreign language education and new mechanisms for regional synergy in the artificial intelligence era.
Titled "Interdisciplinary Integration: 2025 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao High-End Forum on the Cultivation of Distinguished Foreign Language Teachers", the forum aims to respond to the national strategic deployment on promoting educational cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area (GBA) and building a high-quality teaching workforce, as well as to establish a cross-regional, cross-stage and cross-disciplinary academic dialogue platform.

Chen Zhenghong, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC SCNU Committee, addressed the opening ceremony. He pointed out that foreign language teachers not only need to have solid language proficiency, but also should integrate interdisciplinary literacy, data-driven mindset and global perspectives, break away from the traditional single-discipline training mode and proactively respond to the new challenges brought by technological changes and regional development in the new era.

Zhou Hebing, Party Secretary of the School of Foreign Studies, stated that the nurturing of outstanding foreign language teachers is the mission of the times. He further pointed out that the School will continuously deepen collaboration among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, jointly explore a new way for talent cultivation through interdisciplinary integration, and serve the high-quality development of China's foreign language education.
During the forum, experts were invited to deliver speeches. Gu Mingyue, professor of the Education University of Hong Kong, proposed a transdigital literacy framework for the digital era from a sociolinguistic perspective, expanding research dimensions of language competence and identity. Wang Yong, professor of Sun Yat-Sen University, called for optimizing teaching materials and innovating teaching models to enhance students' linguistic, cultural and theoretical confidence.

Experts take part in a roundtable discussion.
Participants held in-depth discussions on the theme of "the cultivation approaches and future development of distinguished foreign language teachers from the perspective of interdisciplinary integration". Besides, in the roundtable discussion, attending experts engaged in lively discussions on topics such as "a regional synergy mechanis" and "integration of digital and artificial intelligence. They unanimously agreed that the cultivation of exceptional foreign language teachers in the future must break down disciplinary silos, strengthen technological integration and tell world stories well based on a Chinese stance.
The forum not only built consensus on "interdisciplinary + digitalization and intelligence + GBA collaboration", but also laid the foundation for establishing a regular cooperation mechanism, said Jin Tan, dean of the School of International Culture.
The forum was co-hosted by the "Language Cognition and Testing Center" - a Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences in Guangdong Province, the School of Foreign Studies, the School of International Culture, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Teachers' Association.
