A series of events celebrating 40 years of South China Normal University's education journey in Macao were held in Macao on October 25.

Hosted by the Chinese Educators Association of Macau, and co-organized by South China Normal University, the Macao Alumni Association of SCNU, and the Macao Amateur Continuing Study Center, the celebration events included an education forum, degree conferment, and a signing and plaque awarding ceremony among others.

Speaking at the launch ceremony at the Macao Science Center, Yang Zhongmin, president of SCNU, said that Macao has been an important component of the university's international education strategy plan. Building on existing collaboration, SCNU will accelerate the development of the Macao International Education Innovation Port, and explore new paths for the integrated development of education in Guangdong and Macao by giving full play to the coordinated mechanism of "one college and three centers", namely, the country's first National Excellent Teacher Training College, as well as the Innovation Talent Training Center, the Hong Kong and Macao Research Center, and the Teacher Development Center.

Cheang Hong Kuong, president of the Chinese Educators' Association of Macau, said that SCNU has built a bridge for educational exchange between the Chinese mainland and Macao since it pioneered training programs in Macao in 1985. Over 70% of teachers of basic education in Macao has been cultivated through South China Normal University programs. Looking ahead to the future, he expects both sides will optimize the talent training system, expand cooperation areas, and develop more platforms to jointly create a new chapter in educational cooperation.

Gong Zhiming, director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau of Macao, pointed out that the Bureau has been actively collaborating with South China Normal University to establish a new teaching and research base focusing on artificial intelligence in education and to jointly develop AI teaching materials and a supporting teacher training system.
The opening ceremony also featured a new book release: "Forty Years of Nurturing Talents: An Overview of the Cooperation between South China Normal University and Macao (1985-2025)". On top of that, an exhibition was held on the sideline of the ceremony to showcase the achievements of SCNU' education journey in Macao over the past 40 years.

Following the launch ceremony, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Forum on AI-Empowered Education was held. Professor Ke Qingchao, dean of the School of Information Technology in Education of SCNU made a report titled "AI Reshaping the Future of Education" in which he explored the background, opportunities, challenges, and reform paths of AI-empowered education from several perspectives. Guest speakers from the Affiliated School of the University of Macau and the Escola Tong Nam also delivered speeches on related topics.

In the afternoon, the degree conferment ceremony for Macao students took place in the Auditorium of the Macao Amateur Continuing Study Center, with 37 graduate degrees awarded. The ceremony featured an address by vice president of SCNU Wang Chunchao, delivered after president Yang Zhongmin had presented diplomas to each student.

To further enhance cooperation, SCNU signed agreements with three middle schools in Macao, namely, Hou Kong Middle School, Escola Sun Wah, and Kwong Tai Middle School to establish teaching practice bases for postgraduates enrolled under the National Excellent Teacher Training Initiative, and president Yang Zhongmin presented plaques to the schools. Besides, representatives of SCNU and the Macao Amateur Continuing Study Center signed the Letter of Intent on Joint Doctoral Talent Training Programs, marking a new stage of cooperation between both sides.

The celebration activities culminated in an evening gala, with SCNU alumni and singers from Macao, as well as faculty and students from the School of Music of SCNU bringing a wonderful show with performances. At the event, a plaque-awarding ceremony was also held for the Macao International Education Innovation Port and the Home of Alumni, during which president Yang Zhongmin presented plaques to the Macao Amateur Continuing Study Center and the Macao Alumni Association of South China Normal University.
