SCNU president Yang Zhongmin delivered his first lecture on ideological and political education on the Shanwei campus on October 22. The theme of the lecture is to encourage students to devote their youthful strength to the progress of education, science and technology, and human resources.
The lecture started from the rock engraved with the school's name at the south gate of the Shanwei campus. Yang talked about the reasons for the development of the Shanwei campus, which is "to bear the mission of the era and to serve the development of the region." He said that higher education, as an important knot of science and technology and innovation, is invaluable for achieving coordinated development between regions, promoting new quality productive forces and the country's modernization.
Speaking at the exhibition hall of the campus, displaying 12 exhibition panels and some 'old' artifacts found during the construction of the campus, Yang focused on the theme of "Struggling to build the university, helping to build a stronger nation in education", leading students to review the history of SCNU since its establishment, and the unique history of the Shanwei campus, which is "running a university in a village committee and building a campus on oyster fields".

Yang pointed out that on September 12, 2021, the Shanwei campus opened on schedule and welcomed the first batch of 620 new students. With its establishment, SCNU now has "four campuses in three cities" and opened a new chapter of its history.
Presently, according to the principle of "what Shanwei needs and what SCNU can do" and the positioning of the Shanwei campus as "cross-cutting, applied and new teacher training", the Shanwei campus takes the initiative to connect with the needs of local industries and social and economic development.
Yang also gave a detailed introduction to achievements in party building, ideological and political education, talent cultivation, discipline construction, scientific research and innovation, teacher education, social service, and external exchanges on the Shanwei campus of SCNU.

Arriving at the waterfront platform of the Shanwei campus, student representatives shared their experience of participating in social practice and demonstrated the practical and theoretical achievements of scientific research projects such as unmanned aerial vehicle detection of wireless 5G communication interference sources and identification of disease in plants and pests.

Yang Zhongmin spoke highly of students' achievements and answered their questions, based on his own experience in scientific research. Yang encouraged students to achieve the following three points: Firstly, lay a solid theoretical foundation, by engaging in meaningful, in-depth, and self-directed learning, aiming provide sufficient intellectual support for the cultivation of innovative thinking; Secondly, break down professional and disciplinary barriers, through mastering extensive knowledge, expanding creative thinking across multiple disciplines, dimensions, and levels, to continuously enhancing thinking and innovation abilities; Thirdly, adhere to be problem-oriented, focussing on the phenomena and problems around, and starting from own interests and capabilities, while persistently solving problems that need to be explored.

At the end of the class, Yang encouraged students to set lofty aspirations, consolidate their knowledge foundation, pay attention to the forefront of science and technology and innovate boldly, shoulder the historical responsibility of promoting the country's development and progress, and contribute their strength to the national rejuvenation.
Yang also had lunch with 13 student representatives and talked with them about their studies and life at SCNU. The representatives shared their experiences and insights about studying at SCNU and gave their suggestions on the university's facilities.
Yang thanked the students for their valuable opinions and suggestions and asked relevant departments to follow up and respond to students' demands. He indicated that it will continue to improve the communication and feedback mechanism through the principal's mailbox, website, new media platforms and so on.
After the lunch meeting, Yang presented the Historical Manuscripts of South China Normal University to the students, encouraging them to learn the history of SCNU, inherit the spirit of SCNU and devote themselves to learning and pursuing excellence.
