SCNU hosted a seminar on the implementation of the Degree Law of the People's Republic of China on September 20 at the International Conference Hall on its Shipai campus.
The seminar aims to help all degree conferring institutions comprehend the Degree Law, clarify the requirements of academic degree works, thoroughly apply the implement of the Degree Law, and promote the continuous improvement academic degree and postgraduate education.
Wang Binwei, Party Committee Secretary of SCNU, highlighted the significant role of the Degree Law in promoting high-quality development of graduate education, enhancing the quality of talent cultivation, and contributing to the construction of an educational powerhouse.
He made three suggestions: deeply understand the meaning of the Degree Law; thoroughly review the implementation of related policies; and drive the process of educational reforms. Wang noted that SCNU would be together with other universities in Guangdong and thoroughly apply the implement to the Degree Law, effectively follow the instruction of the Degree Law in setting educational thoughts, cultivation concepts, cultivation modes and evaluation standards, which all aimed at promoting the high-quality development of academic degree works.

Zhang Guohong, deputy secretary of the CPC Committe of Southern Medical University, also the chairman unit of Association of Graduate Education of Guangdong, urged universities to thoroughly study and implement the Degree Law, to strengthen institutional development, standardize degree management, and improve the quality of degree conferral in Guangdong province.

Shao Yunzhen, deputy director of the Guangdong Department of Education, conveyed several expectations to universities across the province. Firstly, he hopes that each university can profoundly understand the importance of the Degree Law and strictly adhere to it in their decision-making and execution of duties. Secondly, he recommends that universities conduct a comprehensive review of existing regulations to ensure the timeliness and systematicness.
Furthermore, he emphasized the need for universities to strengthen self-management, ensuring the quality of degrees. Lastly, he encouraged universities to continue advancing educational reforms to cultivate innovative talents capable of driving socio-economic development and to establish degree conferral standards that reflect their own characteristics.

The seminar featured reports by Professor Lin Hua of the China University of Political Science and Law and Associate Professor Zhou Xiang of Renmin University of China on the interpretation of the Degree Law and its legislative and judicial practice perspectives. Professor Xie Yu, director of the Degree Office at South China University of Technology, and Professor Chen Jinshi, dean of the Academic Affairs Department at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, shared their insights and reflections of the Degree Law.
The seminar was organized by Association of Graduate Education of Guangdong, guided by Department of Education of Guangdong Province. Leaders from the Department of Education of Guangdong Province and about 220 representatives from more than 70 degree conferring institutions attended the event.
