The 2024 "National Science Education Summer School" - Primary and Secondary School Teachers Training Program kicked off at SCNU on July 29. This marks the third year since SCNU held such an important national event, which brought together a number of renowned science education experts to give lectures to nearly 100 primary and secondary school science teachers from across the country.

The opening ceremony featured opening addresses by Fang Shusheng, counsel at level 2 of the Education Department of Guangdong province; Yang Zhongmin, president of SCNU; Sun Longtao, vice president of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Guangzhou Branch, and Wang Enke, director of the Science Education Committee of SCNU. The ceremony was hosted by Liu Jianwen, vice president of SCNU.

At the ceremony, Yang Zhongmin said SCNU has taken the lead in establishing a committee on science education, with the enrollment in the Master of Science and Technology Education program ranking high within China. Besides, SCNU established the STEM Education Alliance and Joint Research Institutions of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to promote the integrated development of science education within the GBA. He hoped that all the participanting teachers fully engaged in the training and made their contributions to making science learning experiences inclusive for students.

Fang Shusheng said that Guangdong has adopted various strategies to promote science education. By training teachers, expanding scientific activities, and promoting the development of science education in experimental areas and experimental schools, Guangdong aims to promote science education and ease the excessive academic burden at the same time. He expressed his hope that all participating teachers would benefit from this valuable learning opportunity offered at the Summer School.
Sun Longtao, vice president of CAS Guangzhou Branch, expresses expectations for primary and secondary school teachers.
Sun Longtao said that CAS Guangzhou Branch would continue to promote the popularization of high-end scientific research resources, increase interaction with SCNU, and further develop a series of scientific research platforms, so as to provide an exclusive scientific practice platform for primary and secondary school teachers. He hopes that teachers will carry forward the spirit of scientists in their teaching and then encourage young people to nurse an ambition to build China into a world leader in science and technology.

Speaking as the lead expert, Wang Enke said that the training aims to foster collaboration through platform building, and focuses on integrating science education resources andenhancing teachers' teaching skills in science education.
He hoped that the Summer School will spark trainees' interest and intrinsic motivation by offering pre-course materials, promoting practical "outputs" through task-based learning, and enhancing "inputs"of knowledge and skills through deep learning.
He Jingtang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, speaks about his career in architecture.
After the launching ceremony, He Jingtang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chief architect of the Architectural Design and Research Institute of South China University of Technology, gave a special lecture. He shared his career in architecture and gave a few life lessons he has learned.
"Architecture not only serves to make the city better and life more comfortable, but also to record this era," He said that great architecture of today displays the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. No one is isolated in society, and we should shoulder our social responsibilities together. He encouraged participanting students to be passionate about their majors, and work hard to master the objective rules of science. He also actively engaged with the trainees by answering questions and sharing his life experiences.

In the afternoon, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Science Education Forum was held. Experts and scholars from the Education University of Hong Kong, the Lou Hau High School in Macao and SCNU discussed the purpose and the way of integration of science education in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.
Themed on "Integration of science education and interdisciplinary innovation in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao", the training program lasted for five days. A series of training have been given by experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the University of Science and Technology of China, South China Normal University, Education University of Hong Kong, and several primary and secondary schools in Macao. The event was also streamed online, which has been viewed nearly 800,000 times. The closing ceremony was held on July 31.
Since 2022, SCNU and Guangzhou Branch, CAS have organized the “National Science Education Summer School” Primary and Secondary School Teacher Training (Guangzhou venue) for three consecutive years. Academician Zhong Nanshan and General Yang Liwei were invited to make opening addresses at the previous summer school programs respectively.
