The SCNU Dragon Boat Team clinched the championship at the University Group 600-meter straight races by a commanding lead of nearly 10 seconds ahead of the second place at the 2024 Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament on June 16.
Throughout the competition, the SCNU team demonstrated exceptional coordination and competitive spirit. In sync with the drumbeat, the team paddled in unison, performed outstandingly with an impressive two-dragon-boat-length lead throughout the competition, and eventually deserved the championship for SCNU.

The team captain, He Chaoqin, a 2021 undergraduate of the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, valued every training session and every competition, saying, "Regardless of the results, we will give our all."

During daily training, he assists his teammates in promptly correcting their techniques supervising their moves and encouraging them to progress continually. Since the establishment of the team, he along with his team mates has represented the school in multiple competitions. Each competition tests their skills and team spirit, providing them with opportunities for constant reflection and improvement.
Lu Jianhong, a 2022 undergraduate in the same school, has been the newly appointed drummer since this season. The team drummer has to play the drum while keeping an eye on each member's moves. During the competition, Lu ensured that the team's movements were perfectly aligned with the drumbeats, echoing the ethos of "unity, striving, and pursuit of excellence."

Lu owes the team's achievement to difficult daily training methods, such as towing speedboats with the dragon boat and tying tyres to the stern. Besides, the team attaches great importance to developing team cohesion during daily training, which lays a solid foundation for their cooperation.

Huang Xin, the coach of the team, felt stressed when they received the invitation to the Tournament. Despite the unpredictability of competitive sports, he believes dedication and effort are always rewarded. When preparing for the Tournament, he devised detailed training plans to ensure the team's peak performance.

Originating in 1985, the Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational is a long-established and popular traditional event. This year's races include 600-meter straight-line sprints for dragon boats with 22 crew, divided into four categories: Men's Open, Women's Open, Men's International, and University.
This year, the Tournament featured 111 boat racing teams consisting of nearly 4,000 athletes. Nineteen of the teams were from countries and regions including China, the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, the Hong Kong and Macao SARs and overseas business organizations.
