The students, under the guidance of academic and technical staff at the School of Fine Arts, presented their creations at SCNU’s 2024 Graduation Fashion Show held in the Handball Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
One of the highlights of the show is the blend of the traditional and the modern. "This year, our student used digital intelligence technology to carry out innovative design of traditional Yi (an ethnic group of China) costumes." Lin Na, an instructor of the show and teacher of the School of Fine Arts, said.
Gu Siping, the student designer who blended Yi costume elements into her creations, said that she noticed the increasingly silence of traditional Yi culture in the contemporary digital trend and attempted to promote it through digital technology. In clothing materials, she not only used traditional Yi silver accessories, but also used washing, bleaching, silver pressed, burn out printing and other processes to perfectly combine the texture of silver jewelry with leather and denim fabrics.

Lin Na also discovered that students not only focus on cultural inheritance and innovation, but also expressed themselves by injecting new vitality and a sense of the time into their works. For example, one student gained inspiration from plant intelligence and applied it in costume design; some students reflected on the increasing life pressure of young people today and focused on the combination of fashion, comfort and daily life; some collected old clothes and recycled them to arouse people’s awareness of sustainable development.
"The Graduation Fashion Shows of the School of Fine Arts have been staged numerous times and have emerged as a showcase for the culture and art of SCNU." Tang Yong, the director of the 2024 Graduation Fashion Show said. He also mentioned the show has been absent for three years since the last one was held in 2021. "Every piece of clothing is displayed in front of the audience at the same time under the spotlight. We hope to create an audio-visual spectacle that will linger in visitors’ heart as the upcoming graduates bid farewell with their dynamic work."
His hope echoed with the theme of the show "依依(Yiyi)", which means a sense of reluctance to part from somebody. The theme not only served as an outlet for the graduating students’ reluctance to leave the campus, but also symbolized the close connection between people and the clothes they wear, for the Chinese character of "依" is composed of two Chinese characters meaning "people" and "clothes" respectively.
