SCNU president Yang Zhongmin delivered his first lecture on ideological and political education of the spring semester on the Nanhai Campus on April 2. The theme of the lecture is to encourage students to embrace their dreams, work diligently and proactively and show their sense of responsibility in developing new quality productive forces.
SCNU president Yang Zhongmin delivers the lecture.
Yang began the topic with an introduction to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict from the perspective of talents, economy, science and technology, and analyzed the current world economic and political landscape. He indicated that the rapid development of China’s economy is the major change in the world economic landscape, which is the origin of the profound changes with a magnitude unseen in a century. And it is also needed for the world to enter a new economic and political landscape. Currently, China’s economy is switching from high-speed to high-quality development. The switching needs a new theory of productivity, while the new quality productive force is in line with the new development philosophy. Therefore, China needs to accelerate the development of new quality productive forces, according to Yang Zhongmin.
Yang then further elaborated on developing new quality productive forces. He pointed out that the development of new productivity forces and the development of education, science and technology, and human resources support each other. Among these three pillars, human resources are the most active and decisive in the formation of new productive forces. As the joint point of the three pillars, higher education is an indispensable part of the development of new productive forces. Thus, universities should smooth the virtuous circle between the three pillars, helping accelerate the development of new quality productive forces.

Besides, Yang talked about the mission of the universities. He indicated "The goal of building a comprehensive and innovative world-class university with distinctive characteristics in teacher education" was written into the new charter of SCNU. He further introduced SCNU's efforts to build a world-class university as he gave answers to the three questions, namely, "What good traditions does SCNU have", "what is the development foundation of SCNU", and "what development ideas does SCNU have".
Yang said that SCNU has always been in solidarity with the development of the country and national rejuvenation. It has stuck to the motto of "Foster the spirit of working hard; pursue studies with utmost rigor; seek truth from facts with innovation; and be a model of virtue for others", making contributions to the great cause of the country. Since becoming a "double first-class" university in 2017, the university's development has accelerated. Its overall strength, talent-cultivation capacity and efficacy, and teacher team have grown steadily, he said.
Yang stressed that SCNU will carry out the basic task of fostering virtue through education and advancing reform in talent cultivation patterns to arm talents with the abilities of patriotism, fortitude, humility and innovation. In addition, SCNU will carry out the strategy of developing a high-quality teaching force which is virtuous, professional, well-structured and vigorous.
Then, Yang indicated the responsibilities of the youth. He pointed out that China’s young people today have an incomparably broad development stage, especially in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. “New quality productive forces call for youths in the new era who embrace their dreams and work diligently and proactively,” Yang Zhongmin said. Through the comparison between SCNU with other universities, he analyzed the current situation of students' employment and further study at SCNU. He also shared several outstanding students' typical stories about their employment and entrepreneurship, further study and enlistment. He hopes that the students could set up a great ambition to serve the country and integrate their personal ideals and pursuits into the development of the Party and the country.
After the lecture, Yang answered students' questions about the relationship between "artificiality" and "intelligence", enhancing comprehensive competitiveness, and fostering the development of new quality productivity. He encouraged the students to clarify their position, give full play to their advantages, refine their character, develop their skills, and take up their roles in the new course of country building and national rejuvenation.
Students ask president Yang questions.
New quality productive forces, put forward by Chinese president Xi Jinping, mean advanced productivity that is freed from traditional economic growth mode and productivity development paths, features high-tech, high efficiency and high quality, and comes in line with the new development philosophy.
