President Wang Enke delivers the first lecture to students.
The topic of the lecture echoed the opinion of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who called on the majority of teachers to take great educators as example and promote the spirit of educators in a letter addressed to outstanding teacher representatives across the country on the occasion of the 39th Teacher's Day.
Wang Enke first explained the essence of "the Spirit of Chinese educators" based on actual cases, and introduced it from the six aspects. These six aspects are the faith of honesty to the country, the moral sentiment of speaking as a scholar and acting as the world model, the wisdom of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, the attitude of diligent study and innovation, the love of willingness to dedication, and the pursuit of minding the world. Each aspect is an organic whole which is interrelated, interdependent, and logical, providing a principle and a spiritual power to strengthen the development of teachers’ teams in the new era.
Wang Enke introduces the connotation of educator spirits.
Wang Enke said, the spirit of educator is not only the inheritance and continuation of the excellent traditional Chinese culture, but also the condensation and sublimation of teachers’ professional spirit by President Xi Jinping. It conforms to the general law of the world education development. It also embodies the Chinese characteristics of the deep integration of the revolutionary culture, fine traditional culture and advanced socialist culture. Thus, the spirit is engraved with the unique brand of China, which is "in China" and "for China".
This year marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of South China Normal University. For ninety years, SCNU has never forgotten its original intention, kept its mission in mind, and been loyal to the party's educational cause. Wang Enke introduced the specific practice of the educator spirit in different periods from the perspective of historical logic.
Wang Enke introduces the history of SCNU.
During the New Democratic Revolution, SCNU made its commitment to the nation’s rejuvenation, revived Chinese culture, and fully carried forward the love for family and country. During the Socialist Revolution and Construction, it shouldered the mission of fostering professional talents for the central and southern regions. Then, in the new era, the school has always been striving to cultivate outstanding academic talents and teams. 80% of the hosts of the studio of famous teachers and principals of primary and secondary schools in Guangdong province are alumni of SCNU, and they continue to innovate educational concepts and contribute to China's basic education.
Wang Enke pointed out that at present, SCNU takes high-quality development as the theme and takes the construction of "double first-class" as the traction. The school adheres to the school motto of "Foster the spirit of working hard; Pursue studies with utmost rigor; Seek truth from facts with innovation; And be a model of virtue for others." It fully implements the development idea of "highlighting strong characteristics of teacher education, and advancing the level of disciplines", and vigorously implements the strategic initiatives of "fostering high-level platforms and talents, and advancing digitalization and internationalization". It also carries out the fundamental task of moral education and promotes the reform and innovation of teacher education. Therefore, SCNU is committed to cultivating first-class talents, outstanding teachers and future educators.
Wang stressed that student teachers are "teachers of the future", and he encouraged SCNUers to remember the following four points. First, to firmly embrace the ideal goal of "cultivating oneself and serving the country"; second, to observe self-restraint with educational feelings of “elevating moral character and teaching with enjoyment”; third, to cultivate the educational wisdom of "cultivating students both their intelligence and character, and teaching them in accordance with their aptitude"; fourth, to practice the teaching skills of "studying, thinking, practicing, and innovating".
The new era calls for new responsibilities. Wang encouraged SCNUers to take famous educators as examples and vigorously carry forward their spirit. SCNUers should establish great ambition and keep in mind the original mission of educating the people for the party and the country. Moreover, they should be self-confident and self-reliant and work hard, so as to make new and greater contributions to the construction and development of a strong country and the great cause of national rejuvenation. Finally, he hoped each SCNUer "Be the best of yourself at every stage of life!"
