The 2023 South Central Region of the Chinese Teaching Heroes Conference was successfully held at the School of International Culture of SCNU and simultaneously accessible via CLASSIN (an on-line live-classroom interactive system) on November 11.
Welcome to the South Central Region of the Chinese Teaching Heros Conference.
With the theme "Creating a high-quality Chinese classroom", the event was held by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) and the National Postgraduate Education Committee for the Master in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, and hosted by SCNU. A total of 27 teams of teachers and students of 23 colleges and universities from Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan participated in the event.
Tan Weihong, director of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation of SCNU, first introduced the development of teaching skills exchange in the south-central part of China on behalf of SCNU at the opening ceremony. She pointed out that this year was the third time that SCNU has undertaken the organization of the event. SCNU attaches great importance to it. Since June, SCNU has set up an organizing committee headed by the school leader to ensure the smooth orgazization of the event.

Zuo Pengjun, dean of the School of International Culture of SCNU, made a speech on behalf of the expert review team. He elaborated his feelings and perceptions of the evaluation work from five aspects, including the hope to understand and grasp the international Chinese education discipline more comprehensively and accurately. He expected that all universities and teams could continue to advance and work together to contribute to the development of international Chinese education.
Lü Xia from Guangxi University, Wang Yanjun from Jinan University and Song Weiyang from Changsha University of Science and Technology delivered speeches on behalf of their university teams and overseas Confucius Institute teams. They expressed their confidence and vision to work together to continue the heroic spirit of, building high-quality Chinese classrooms.
With the theme "The Road to Success -- Smooth Chapter", the teachers' team of SCNU adopted a thematic and task-based grammar teaching model with three planes to promote international students' understanding and mastery of Chinese grammar rules. The three planes included the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic plane. Through the Tangfeng Chinese Small Private On-line Course (SPOC), the teacher let students preview the content of the study first, and then conducted thematic drills. In terms of communicative tasks, real tasks and scenarios were set up so that students could use the learnt sentence patterns in their lives. After the review by experts, the work was recommended for the national exchange activities this year.
The work of the students'team of SCNU was the course "Chinese Architecture in Chinese Characters", which took the history of ancient Chinese architecture's development and evolution as a clue. It followed the teaching philosophy of being student-centered and gave full play to the instructor's guiding role. It also adopted the teaching mode of the flipped classroom, dividing the class into parts of the introduction, explanation, drills and interaction.

All the teams conducted thematic seminars, polished their teaching designs and recorded various teaching courses. They fully demonstrated the spirit of international Chinese language teachers in the new era who strove to "create a high-quality Chinese classroom". This event provided a platform for international Chinese language teachers to update their teaching concepts and innovate teaching strategies.

Zuo Pengjun and other professors from Guangxi University, Hainan Normal University, Henan University, Center China Normal University and Jinan University participated in the event as reviewers. They agreed that the exchange works had a wide range of curriculum types, conformed to the laws of language teaching and focused on the effectiveness of language teaching. The teaching methods of these works were novel and the videos were well-produced, which fully demonstrated the teams'exquisite teaching skills, broad cultural knowledge, passionate national sentiment and wide international vision.

The 2023 South Central Region of the Chinese Language Teaching Heroes Conference was held in six regions: namely at Northeast Normal University for the north-eastern region of China, at Beijing Foreign Studies University for the northern region, at East China Normal University for the eastern region, at Yunnan Normal University for the south-western region, at Xi'an International Studies University for the north-western region and at South China Normal University for the south-central region. The national exchange activities will be held on-site in December this year in Beijing.
