Polina Malahova, a Latvian student at the School of International Culture of SCNU, won 3 gold medals at the 2023 China University Student Martial Arts Taolu Routine Championship.
She won the gold respectively in the Women's Single Weapon (Jianshu) A-Group A, the Women's Other Traditional Quanshu A-Group A, and the Women's Xiangxingquan A-Group A. "I'm quite glad to study at SCNU and get involved in the training of the martial arts team. The teacher standardized my technical movement and scheduled the time for me to practice the Taolu routine. I have my classes in the morning and train in the afternoon, which makes me feel that I'm living my life to the full," she said in an interview after the competition.

The gold-winner has been a huge fan of Chinese culture. Growing up under the influence of Mulan and Bruce Lee, Polina began learning martial arts from the age of 11. Talking about winning the 3 gold medals at this championship, she felt grateful for all the endeavour and said that it has greatly boosted her confidence.

Besides the gold, SCNU's team won 1 silver and 1 bronze medal, altogether coming home with 8 top ranks in 13 different events.
Zheng Qi, a Grade 2022 postgraduate of the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, won second place in Group B of Sun Style Tai-Chi. "I appreciate the chance that my coach offered to me, as well as my teammates' encouragement. It was the regular training that helped me get this silver medal. Though I didn't win the gold, I believe that there's still room to grow but it takes time! I will work step by step, and strive to better myself," said Zheng.

SCNU martial athletes carried forward the spirit of perseverance at the competition. The team was led by Huang Bo, vice dean of the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, and coached by Niu Xiaomei. Niu was awarded as "Outstanding Coach" for her excellent guidance, while He Jianhua, a student of the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, won the award of "Outstanding Athlete" for his performance.

Sponsored by the Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC), the 2023 China University Student Martial Arts Taolu Routine Championship (Group A and Group B) was hosted at Wuqing District Sports Centre in Tianjin. During the four-day competition, 804 athletes from 184 universities participated in various events including the traditional bare-hand routine, traditional weapon routine, compulsory Tai-chi, and so on.
