Four teams from South China Normal University (SCNU) achieved remarkable success and received prizes in the prestigious Huawei ICT Competition. The award ceremony took place in Hainan on the afternoon of April 13, 2023.
The team, including Chen Zihao, Peng Zimian and Li Haorong from the School of Computer Science of SCNU secured the second prize in the national practice finals. Liu Bing and Shen Yingshan, Zeng Xiyin, Zhou Qianyi and Zhang Hengwei won the second prize in the national innovation finals. Two other teams received the third prize in the innovation finals.
The SCNU team formed by Chen Zihao, Peng Mumian and Li Haorong was outstanding through the selections and theory-based answering of the Practice Competition and won the grand prize in the Computer Track during the provincial practice finals held on December 11, 2022. A total of 530 students from 78 universities were selected from 4,060 students from 92 universities to enter the national finals.
In the national finals, held on March 27, 2023, over 30 universities, including Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, participated on the same stage. The competition was divided into theoretical question answering and lab exams, thoroughly evaluating participants’ mastery of Linux, Huawei OpenEuler and Huawei OpenGauss database.
Students used different types of ICT (such as AI, IoT, big data, and cloud) to solve real-life problems, propose solutions that have social and business value, and design models with comprehensive functions in the Innovation Competition.
18 teams from SCNU participated in the Innovation Competition, competing against dozens of teams from other famous school across the country. All teams submitted well-designed technical reports and documents after choosing topics, selecting tools, ensuring the technical track, optimizing the scheme through iterative processes, deploying the development testing, trialing and so on. Among over 600 teams, three SCNU teams were selected for the national finals. They won the judges' praise for the relevance of their topics, availability of the technology of their choice and the fruitful results they achieved.
In the process of the Huawei ICT Competition, teachers from the School of Computer Science, the School of Artificial Intelligence, the Aberdeen Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and the School of Software of SCNU demonstrated great dedication. They paid careful attention, organized meticulously, innovated their guidance during the pandemic, and overcame difficulties to carry out blended instruction, consisting of both on-line training, and classroom training and instruction.
SCNU will continue to promote the cultivation of students’ abilities to practice and innovate, facilitate learning and teaching with competition, organize students to participate in high-level competitions, and explore new modes of talent development through industry and education integration.
Since 2020, the Huawei ICT Competition has been included in the list of the competitions for college students all around the country. The China Association of Higher Education recognized it as one of the widely accepted and highly-regarded national competitions. The Huawei ICT Competition 2022-2023 featured three tracks and six competitions, attracting over 10,000 students from numerous universities across the country. Throughout the six-month-long competition, each track received more than 1,000 submissions. The event set new records in terms of the number of sign-ups, the scale of the competition, and the quantity and quality of works produced.
