Aimed at facilitating the professional development of new teachers and the integrated development of basic education of mainland China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), a four-day study tour for new teachers in Hong Kong was launched. The opening ceremony was held at South China Normal University on April 11.

At the opening ceremony, Wang Enke, president of SCNU, said that the study tour was organized with the anticipation to help new teachers in Hong Kong cultivate a sense of patriotism and achieve comprehensive growth. It will play a key role in jointly cultivating a high-quality teacher group in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and promoting high-quality development of basic education in the region.

Wang added that SCNU has always maintained positive interaction and cooperation with Hong Kong in the field of education. SCNU attaches great importance to this program and has formulated a comprehensive and systematic training scheme based on its needs and goals. Apart from the 100 new teachers from Hong Kong, 30 new teachers from Guangzhou were also specially invited to participate in the program, hoping to promote information sharing, professional improvement, and collaborative development of teachers, and contribute to the establishment of a Guangdong-Hong Kong teacher professional development community.

Li Mei-Sheung, permanent secretary for Education services of the Education Bureau, thanked the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the Department of Education of Guangdong province and SCNU for their dedicated efforts in preparing for the training program. Li pointed out that SCNU, as the organizer, has rich experience and excellent achievements in teacher training. She believed that through the well-planned curriculum and varied activities, new teachers in Hong Kong will better grasp social and economic development, history and cultural heritage of the country. In the future, there will be further optimization of education in various ways and through various channels, focusing on cultivating students' sense of patriotism and their identification with the country.

Zhu Chaohua acknowledged SCNU as a leader in teacher education in Guangdong province and its unceasing contributions to the education in Guangdong, especially to the development of education in the GBA. It is an innovative step for SCNU to organize the newly-employed primary and secondary school teachers from Hong Kong to experience the social economy, science and technology culture, and people's lived experiences and spirituality of mainland China, and promote the in-depth integration and sustainable development of Greater Bay Area.

After the opening ceremony, Wu Yingmin, who is a distinguished educator in China, vice president of the Chinese Society of Education and the first president of the Guangdong Primary and Secondary School Principals' Association, delivered a report titled "The First Step of a Teacher Career".

Professor Wang Hong, minister of College of Teacher Education of SCNU and Dean of College of Teacher Education of the GBA held a lecture with the theme of "Dialogue with ChatGPT: What makes a Teacher Irreplaceable?". Through the form of "World Cafe", teachers from both Hong Kong and Guangdong had lively discussions on relevant topics.

According to the training scheme, the training tour consists of seminars, World Cafe, school visit, interactive forums, cultural investigation, enterprise visits, and other forms of activities, focusing on experiencing traditional culture and discussing the application of educational information technology, the reform of classroom teaching, the improvement of teaching ability, and the creation of school characteristics.

SCNU has specifically arranged the new teachers to visit various institutions such as the Affiliated High School of South China Normal University and the Cultural and Educational Exchange Center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, to help them have in-depth discussions with their peers in mainland education, learn about the latest advancements of high-technology in education, and gain a deeper appreciation of Lingnan culture.

The training starting on April 11 was the first phase of the Hong Kong New Teachers' Study Tour, and also the first stop of the study program. A second group of Hong Kong new teachers arrived in Guangdong for training on April 19.
