With six gold, eight silver, and five bronze medals, SCNU martial arts athletes swept the board with 41 top-eight gratifying prizes in the 2022 China University Student Martial Arts Championship (Group C and Group D). This outstanding achievement is a testament to the hard work and perseverance of SCNUers.

The SCNU Martial Arts Team is led by Huang Bo, vice dean of the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, and coached by Niu Xiaomei.

Zheng Shaojun from Grade 2019, had an excellent performance during the championship and won the gold medal in the men's optional Nandao event. This was his debut in a national competition during his four-year college life. "I am very grateful that I proved myself in this competition," said Zheng. He explained that he had been actively preparing for the championship since last year. Despite the demands of his internship, he remained committed to his training and dedicated long hours to practice every night. The sudden outbreak of the pandemic interrupted his training momentum. After he recovered from a fever caused by the coronavirus, he went back to school and started training again. "Luckily I learned that the championship would resume, and I told myself to seize the chance to participate in this competition, which might be my first and last time in college."

It was also the first time for Wang Junkai, a 2021 undergraduate, to take part in the China University Student Martial Arts Championship. He won the first prize in the men's optional Jianshu (swordcraft) event. Quite hopeful to prove himself through the championship as well, he said after the competition, "Winning the first prize greatly enhanced my confidence." He attributed his success not only to his hard work but also to the support he received from the coach and leaders, as well as for his teammates' help and enlightenment, for which he expressed his gratitude. "I've been at a loss during the training period. Thanks to everybody's support, I adjusted myself step by step. Eventually, I regained my confidence."

Despite the stormy weather during the championship, SCNU athletes demonstrated their best capabilities, and conveyed the charm of martial arts by combining toughness with softness in each posture. This reflected the spirit of martial arts - striving to combat and perseverance - and the resilience and determination of SCNUers.

The success could not be gained without the hard work of coaches and students, as well as the great support of SCNU. Teachers and students promised to take this competition as an opportunity to accumulate experience and strive for greater achievements in future competitions, so as to paint a new brush of glory on the sports cause of SCNU.

A total of 992 athletes, coaches, team leaders, and referees from 78 universities across the country participated. The championship included nearly 200 events, covering all the traditional and competitive martial arts routines. Besides, teams from Malaysia and Singapore also participated in the study and exchange activities.
