SCNU held a training session and departure ceremony on February 23 for students who are going to teach as volunteers in the western part of China.
More than 50 volunteers participate the ceremony.
Destinations for volunteer teachers include Xinjiang, Tibet, Guizhou province and other ethnic minority areas. Lei Lei, head of the Student Affairs Office of SCNU, gave a thematic training on the work in ethnic regions and spoke about the work done for students of ethnic minority groups at SCNU. She also emphasized some matters needed attention during volunteer teaching, including safety issues, respect for local customs and practices, and adaptation to the climate and environment.
Mcmattie Tursun, student representative from Xinjiang, also gave a lecture about the local customs and practices in Shufu county, one of the destinations for volunteer teachers in Xinjiang.
50 volunteers attended the ceremony, including the tenth batch of volunteer teachers for Nyingchi prefecture in Tibet and the second batch of volunteer teachers for Kashgar, in Xinjiang. During the ceremony, Lian Zechun, secretary of the Chinese Communist Youth League Committee of SCNU, presented flags to the two teams. The volunteers took a solemn oath, promising to devote their youthful energy and intelligence to the education of people in western China.
Lian Zechun encouraged the volunteers to strengthen their faith and learn their mission by heart to show the responsibility of SCNU’s students. She said that volunteers should face challenges and difficulties bravely and increase solidarity and cooperation to fulfill their educational ideal. She also pointed out that volunteers should observe work discipline strictly, keep the security issues in mind and show the good spirit of SCNU students.

Since 2018, SCNU has selected nine batches of volunteers with a total of 137 students to teach voluntarily in Nyingchi prefecture in Tibet. In 2022, SCNU started to provide educational support for Xinjiang and Guizhou province, sending a first batch of volunteers for Kashgar, in Xinjiang and Taijiang, in Guizhou province in western China with altogether 32 volunteers.
This Spring, SCNU also formed a propaganda group of 11 students to go to Shufu county of Kashgar, in Xinjiang to carry out volunteer work, and assigned 33 volunteers to Nyingchi prefecture, Kashgar and Taijiang county to pass on the work of volunteer teaching and continue to write a new chapter in SCNU’s volunteer work in western China.
