Since its founding in 1933, South China Normal University (SCNU) has been dedicated to education for spreading knowledge and cultivating talents. The year 2023 marks the 90th anniversary of SCNU. When the Ceiba speciosa trees and Cercis chinensis Bunge blossom next November, SCNU will hold grand ceremonies to celebrate this special year.
SCNU has a long history of teacher education and talent cultivation. The history of SCNU dates back to the Canton Christian College founded in 1888, the Formal College of Guangdong and Guangxi founded in 1905, and the Guangzhou Municipal Formal College founded in 1922.
In the past ninety years, despite wars, poverty, and other hardships, SCNU has been specialising in higher teacher education, supporting the education strategies of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and devoting themselves to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, which helps to wake the nation up, raise talents with professional skills, and help the youth form their beliefs and ideals.
In 1996, SCNU became a member of "Project 211", a national project aiming to establish 100 well-acknowledged key universities and colleges in China. In 2017, it was listed under the "Double First-Class University Plan", another national project aiming for China to have 42 world-class universities and approximately 456 world-class disciplines in 95 universities by mid-century. Now, it has developed into a high-level comprehensive university, distinctively featuring teacher education and a wide range of disciplines.
Over the years, SCNU has cultivated more than 900,000 excellent teachers and talents in various fields for the country. Generations of SCNU's students, who always bear in mind the top priorities of the country, take action whenever and wherever people are in need, setting a good example of contributing to China's education and development.
SCNU has made great achievements and had a strong impact on the country today by carrying forward the wisdom of its predecessors. Serving the country by developing education and fostering virtue through education, SCNU takes hold in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (the Greater Bay Area), influencing the country and even the world.
SCNU always centers on teacher education. Being a highland of cultivating educational talents in southern China, SCNU devotes to building a high-quality rank of teachers for basic education in the Greater Bay Area and anticipates improving national basic education in the meantime. More than 80% of the hosts of the Distinguished Teacher Workshop and Distinguished Principal Workshop in Guangdong province are alumni of SCNU.
SCNU always insists on comprehensive development. Eleven disciplines of SCNU have been listed in the global top 1% in the ESI, with four more ranked in the top 5%. The discipline of Physics has entered the national project of "World-class Disciplines Development", while the discipline of Psychology has been defined as A+ in the fourth round of discipline evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education. Additionally, the School of Marxism of SCNU has been selected as the "National Key Marxist College Construction" in 2019.
SCNU always takes innovation as a lead. Owing to its innovativeness, SCNU has been selected as one of the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Colleges designated by the Ministry of Education, as the first batch of National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Demonstrative Colleges, and as the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Base.
SCNU now embarks on a bright new future. In the new era, SCNU will stick to the socialist orientation in school running, feature education with Chinese characteristics, and keep responding to the questions posed by China, by the world, by the people, and by the times.
To stay true to the original aspiration and forge ahead on the new journey, SCNU will persistently implement strategies of strengthening the strong points in teacher education and improving the levels of all disciplines, and consolidate the achievements of constructing the "National Demonstration Universities for Party Building Work".
Led by first-class Party building and Ideology and Politics, SCNU is now promising talent cultivation and discipline development, delving into cutting-edge research, introducing new talents, strengthening international cooperation and providing high-quality social services to meet the expectation of the National "Double First-class" Development Schemes, to strive to rank among the best teacher training universities in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and to establish a distinctive world-class university by the middle of this century.
On the joyous occasion of the approaching 90th anniversary, SCNU sincerely welcomes all of you to come to the celebration. Serial activities that aim to celebrate SCNU's 90th anniversary are scheduled to be held in November 2023.
