A total of eight teams of students from SCNU swept the board in the 5th Open Source Innovation Competition, winning one first prize, one second prize, two third prizes, and four honorable prizes. With the number of awards accounting for half of the total prizes, SCNU became the only unit boasting all winning participating teams.
Only 11 teams were shortlisted for the final event, of which five from SCNU. They stood out among 4,000 teams from across the country and attained one first prize, one second prize, two third prizes.

The SCNU teams were comprised of students from four colleges, namely, the School of Engineering, the School of Computer Science, the Aberdeen Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and the School of Software. All of them participated in the Open Source Project Contribution track, which was newly added this year. It is known as the most difficult and demanding track with over 9,400 people, the largest number of participants and the largest amount of cash award worth 1.03 million yuan.
According to the rules, the 5th Open Source Innovation Competition consists of four tracks, viz. "Open Source Project Contribution Competition", "Open Source Task Challenge Competition", "Open Source Case Teaching Competition" and "Open Source Code Commentary Competition", attracting a total of 23,972 contestants from 1134 universities nationwide. With thousands of entries in each track, the number of contestants, the scale of the competition, the quantity and quality of entries have reached a record high.
With the great support from SCNU, these eight teams were established and began the intensive process of development and practice from May till June 2022. Through topic and tool selection, technical route determination, scheme optimization, multiple iterations, development testing, trial, etc, each project was successfully submitted before the deadline on October 18. One group even submitted 812 times to get it perfect. Each team submitted a carefully designed technical report of 20 to 30 pages (10,000 - 15,000 words) bearing the logo of the competition. Not only were all projects practical, but also novel integrating advanced technology and yielding fruitful results, which won praise from the judges.
Guided by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the China Computer Federation (CCF) hosted the 5th Open Source Innovation Competition, which serves to activate open source innovation, cultivate talents, empower open source ecological construction, and explore open source education reform. The competition focused on open source software in the fields of software technology, as well as AI and big data. Universities including Tsinghua University cooperated with Baidu and Huawei to set up questions for the competition.
Open source was included in the "14th Five-Year Plan" for the first time in 2021. At present, the open source and information innovation industry has become a national strategy, which is increasingly valued and invested by the government. Open source has become an important mode of software technology innovation and collaborative development, bringing important opportunities for high-quality development of the digital economy. It also enjoys broad prospects and potential for development as an important support and handle of the information innovation industry.
