The undergraduate team of SCNU won the national first prize in the 12th MathorCup College Mathematical Modeling Challenge in 2022, which was successfully concluded on May 26. It is the third time since 2020 that SCNU has won the first prize.
According to the rules of the competition, participants are required to solve questions derived from practical situations in fields such as artificial intelligence and communication networks. The first prize winning team, consisting of three students Tan Yongqi, Li Mingxia and Wang Zisheng from the School of Mathematical Sciences, worked on the problem about site planning and regional clustering of mobile communication networks. Their task was to use mathematical models to establish new base stations to solve the problem of the weak coverage area of the live network, according to the coverage of the live network antenna.

To solve the problem, the team said they first built and solved a simple model based on certain assumptions. After several tests, a more complex model was eventually built to meet the requirements of question, ensuring that the model’s adaptability to complex situations was improved under the premise that the model was solvable. Meanwhile, to make the model innovative, they paid more attention to the authors’ innovative opinions and discussions on model optimization and improvement when reviewing relevant papers, trying to adopt similar methods to reduce the shortcomings of the model and fulfill the task.
"The challenge not only enriched our understanding of such problems related to modern technology, but also made the division and cooperation between teammates more mature. The efficiency of practical communication and modeling has improved," the team leader Tan Yongqi said.
Besides the first prize, SCNU has also won 9 national second prizes and 14 national third prizes in the undergraduate group, and one national third prize in the postgraduate group. This is the second time that postgraduate teams from SCNU have won the awards in the postgraduate division.
This year’s challenge attracted 8,970 teams from 722 universities in China. Besides, a number of students from foreign universities also took part in the contest, including students from Middlesex University, Saint-Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, the University of Southern California, the University of Melbourne, Rutgers University, and the University of Toronto.
Organized by the Chinese Society of Optimization, Overall Planning and Economical Mathematics, the MathorCup College Mathematical Modeling Challenge is an academic competition for full-time college students, which provides a platform to showcase their discipline foundation and broaden their scientific research horizons, enabling students to improve their ability to use theoretical knowledge to solve social hot issues creatively and cooperatively in extracurricular science and technology activities.
The competition also holds the seminar about mathematical modeling in enterprises application annually and invites senior algorithm experts from companies and institutions such as Alibaba, MathWorks, Didi Dache to give presentation and share the application of mathematics in solving practical problems.
