SCNU celebrated the opening of its 15th Reading Festival themed on “Charming Classics, love reading at SCNU” in the form of a reading salon at the university library on the Shipai campus on the occasion of the arrival of the World Book Day.
Five special guests, including school leaders, staff and faculty members and student representatives, were invited to share their views on reading and had discussions with audiences during the salon. Due to the epidemic control measures, only a number of students from different colleges could participate, while hundreds more joined the discussion via live broadcast.
Wu Jian, vice-president of SCNU attended the activity as one of the special guests and expressed his expectations to students. He said that when we choose good books to read, we can meet, talk and debate with the great souls in those books, and feel their sorrow and joy. He encouraged college students to read more good books, develop good habits of reading and absorb spiritual nutrients from books, while growing up as pillars of the country.

Wang Yubo, vice curator of the university library, introduced the 2021 reading report of SCNU from three aspects: the use of library space, readers’ borrowing behavior and the use of electronic resources. According to various data, the lending volume of paper books doubled in 2021 compared with 2020, and the use of electronic resources had also risen. She said it can be seen that readers like to read and stay in the library and the university library will continue to provide better services for readers.

On top of sharing reading methods, the guests have also been asked to pick a good book with far-reaching influence on their growth. For example, for those who are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree, library curator Zhao Gansen recommended the book How to Get a PhD, from which, he said they could learn how to develop critical thinking and structured thinking skills, how to read literature, how to communicate, how to conduct scientific research and so on.
For students interested in literature reading, Wang Jun, a teacher of the School of Foreign Studies, recommended the book Master and Margaret. He said he has been touched by the sentence “Cowardice is the greatest defect of mankind” in the book and thus fell in love with Russian literature. Zhang Yifan, a postgraduate student from the School of Psychology, shared the book Educated: A Memoir, which let him rethink some important life problems: “Who am I? Why do I get a doctorate? What kind of life will I live in the future?”
During the discussion session, participants spoke freely, sharing their effective reading methods about how to read the four great classic Chinese novels like Dream of Red Mansions, and other good books like Zhuangzi, which motivated the atmosphere of the salon event to the climax. Besides, they also exchanged their views on the topic of ' reading and growth '. The words the guests shared shone the light of thought, and let them benefit a lot, some students commented online.
It is hoped that students make more use of the library, read more systematically and deeply, and participate in the series of cultural promotion activities of the 15th SCNU reading festival in 2022, in order to harvest more growth, said Zhao Gansen.
