The results of the postgraduate qualifying exam for 2022 were released recently. If you are going for a Master’s degree at SCNU, you must want to know more about the school’s postgraduate education. Now, we would like to take you to look back at some of the highlights of 2021 at the Graduate School of SCNU.
1. 100 excellent micro-video lectures dedicated to the centennial of the Party
On the occasion of the Centennial of the Communist Party of China (CPC), SCNU launched a competition of micro-video lecture production in ideological and political education and encouraged teachers to design relevant courses for graduate students. 100 excellent micro-video lectures stood out.

The micro-video lectures cover a wide range of courses from ideology and politics to fine arts and physical education, etc.. For example, the Study of Learning Psychology by professor Mo Lei, the head of the psychology discipline at SCNU, and History of Reform and Opening-up by Chen Jinlong, were ranked in the list of 100 micro-video lectures.
2. Comprehensive revision of the postgraduate curriculum
In March 2021, SCNU launched a comprehensive revision of the postgraduate curriculum in order to ensure the high-quality development of postgraduate education.
Faculty members participate in the discussion of the postgraduate curriculum reform.
According to the revision, the number of programs for a Master’s degree were adjusted from 157 to 45 (33 for the first-level discipline and 12 for the second-level). The programs for a Doctoral degree were adjusted from 75 to 22, two of which for the second-level discipline. The training programs for the Professional Master’s degree in 16 categories and four fields have also been revised.
The new version has been implementedfor those enrolled in SCNU in September, 2021.
3. Special reform of the Master of Education in the new era
SCNU carried out the reform of the management mechanism, cultivation years and cultivation methods of the Master of Education (M.Ed.). A Master of Education Center was established. The academic term of the whole field of the M.Ed. was changed from 2 to 3 years, and the extension year is mainly used for practical ability development.
The first training for mentors of Master of Education from within and outside SCNU held at Shipai campus.
In terms of faculty team building, the first large-scale training for all the M.Ed. mentors from within and outside SCNU was successfully held on December 16. The training was conducted in a combination of live-streaming and traditional training, with simultaneous live broadcast from the China Knowledge Network to universities nationwide. The number of the on-line participants at home and abroad reached more than 25,000.
4. First doctoral program of SCNU in HK
On June 25, the Kick-off Ceremony for the Doctoral Program of SCNU in HK was held on the campus and viewable through live-streaming. The PhD program in Psychology and Physical Education in the Hong Kong SAR is the first PhD program officially approved and registered by SCNU outside the Chinese mainland, which is a milestone for the international development of SCNU.

This enrollment application for this program was completedby January 2021, with preliminary and review examinations to be held in March. A total of 10 part-time doctoral students have been admitted to the disciplines of Psychology and Kinesiology, while other applicants are mainly in the field of education, business and sports in Hong Kong.
5. First Party branch selected one of the National Model Party Postgraduate Branches
In August 2021, the Party Branch of the Psychological Counseling Services for postgraduate students at the School of Psychology was selected as one of the second batch of 100 Model Party Branches for Postgraduates in domestic colleges and universities.

The branch has been actively serving the society, providing a range of on-line psychological counseling services to help people in need and tackle their psychological problems caused by the pandemic.
In addition, this party branch has long been involved in poverty alleviation and education in the poor areas in China. It also regularly conducts psychological group counseling activities in prisons and juvenile correctional centers, etc., and provides long-term community psychological counseling services in Guangzhou and Foshan, etc.
6. Launch of the selection of outstanding mentoring teams for graduate students
In March 2021, SCNU launched the first selection of mentoring teams of graduate students, which had an outstanding performance last year, and simultaneously launched the fourth annual selection of "my favorite mentor" to select outstanding teachers. Finally 15 teams and 15 teachers stood out.
Among them, Professor Li Sheng, the School of Life Sciences, was also nominated for "My Favorite Mentors". It's worth noting that he won the first prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award for Natural Science in 2021, which is the third one in the history of SCNU in eight years.

7. The 14th Xiang Qin Forum themed love for China and the Party
On December 8, the 14th Xiang Qin Forum, a postgraduate academic activity festival at SCNU, was successfully concluded. 320 events were held on the three campuses, with a participation of 110,400 students from 36 colleges. Besides, it was also the first time that the closing ceremony was broadcast on line in 8K high-definition, and the on-line broadcast attracted more than 50,000 viewers.

There were two highlights in these activities. First, the red culture featured with love for the country and the party ran through the activity. Second, deeper cooperation with the Guangdong Museum Association was carried out in form of on-campus activities. The event included a series of activities, such as a photography contest, anEnglish speech contest and so on.
8. SCNU’s international joint PhD programs yield good results
SCNU has signed joint-training agreements of double degree PhD (referred to as "2+2" joint training programs) with internationally renowned universities such as the University of Twente, Eindhoven University of Technology, and the University of Groningen. The research performance of SCNU graduate students reached a new high, with a total of 1,880 papers, monographs, and patents of all kinds.
For example, Hou Jiaxin, one of the PhD students in the joint program between SCNU and the University of Groningen, in the Netherlands, published a paper entitled Photo-responsive helical motion by light-driven molecular motion by light-driven molecular motors in a liquid crystal network as the first author in the international authoritative journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition. The study was co-supervised by Prof. Chen Jiawen from the South China Academy of Advanced Optoelectronics of SCNU and Prof. Ben L. Feringa, a Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences.

9. Excellent performance in national practical skills competitions
In September 2021, a graduate team, led by Prof. Chen Tong sheng of the college of Biophotonics won the Gold Prize of the Guangdong Postdoctoral Innovation Competition and the Gold Prize of the National Postdoctoral Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.

Besides, SCNU postgraduates have achieved fruitful practical results in 2021, with 17 national invention patents, six utility model patents, one software copyright, seven awards in the Challenge Cup competition, and one award in the Internet+ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, etc..
10. New Asian record at the National Games
Liu Xiang, a 2019 graduate of the School of Physical Education & Sports Science, made history in the 2021 China National Games, defending the championship and hitting a new Asian Record of 23.97 in the women's 50m free.

For her achievements, Liu gave credit to her coach and Alma Mater, “Behind these achievements are training and help from the Party, my country, my coach and my college. I will never forget that it was my Alma Mater that nurtured me, and whenever I think of SCNU I can't help but excite with pride and gratitude," she said.
