The 2021 "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" On-line Event of Chinese Language Teaching Skills Demonstration & Exchange of Top Teachers for the south-central part of China was held at SCNU on December 18.
Hosted by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education, and jointly organized by SCNU, the event is part of a national exhibition, which aims to encourage international Chinese language teachers to update their teaching concepts, innovate teaching methods, and achieve high-quality development of international Chinese language education.
At the opening ceremony of the exchange event, vice-president of SCNU Yang Zhongmin pointed out that the “Chinese Language Teaching Idols" Online Event is a key brand of international Chinese exchange activities. It facilitates the development of international Chinese teachers, promotes exchange and cooperation with international Chinese teachers, and plays a positive role in promoting the reform and development of international Chinese education in China. He said that the elaborate curriculum design and exquisite lecture results of each university team reflected each other's interests, complemented each other's strengths, and worked together to consolidate and deepen the exchange and mutual learning mechanism of international Chinese teacher education in China.

With the theme of "New Ideas, New Skills and New Practices", the event attracted a total of 134 teachers and students from 24 colleges and universities in six provinces and regions in south-central China, namely Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan Province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Participants demonstrated their teaching materials and exchanged views on teaching design through live broadcast on the CLASSIN platform.
According to the organizer, teaching design covered a range of classes, such as business Chinese class, culture class and language skills classes, and so on. The selection of teaching content reflected the integrated expression of traditional culture and contemporary China, including Chinese marriage customs, Chinese classical music, Chinese medicine, and new contents such as Chinese rural revitalization, Chinese new economy, etc. Participating instructors came from all over the world, fully reflecting the diversity of the group who is committed to teaching Chinese as a foreign language around the world.

The team from SCNU, consisting of six teachers Lv Wei, Ren Guangshi, Chen Jun, Wang Lan, Chen Yu and Wu Yingzi, demonstrated their work called China Profile. They paid attention to the design and practice of the blended teaching mode of "learning-thinking-experience-feeling," as well as attention to the process, system, interaction and richness. In their lesson plan they focused on Chinese new economy and live-streaming e-commerce. In this lecture, teachers and students interacted frequently, making the atmosphere active.
"'Chinese Language Teaching Idols' is a good platform to share teaching experience and teaching skills," said the team of Xiangtan University (XTU), the Exchange Delegation of Oversea Confucius Institutes. "After this event, we will take more active steps to explore teaching methods, expand new ideas, get a deep understanding of the learners and turn the experience into practice, so as to make contributions to international Chinese language education.”
Fu Lei, a postgraduate student in the field of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages mentioned that the excellent performances from lots of universities broadened her horizons. She said she was touched by the persistence and creative spirit of Chinese language teachers during the pandemic and she hopes that more and more young teachers will choose this great career.
It's a new challenge, as well as a new chance for international Chinese language education during the pandemic, said Tan Weihong, director of the Office of International Exchange & Cooperation at the closing of the event. She believes that the meeting is not only a stimulus to communication between schools nationwide, but also motivates young people, pushing the Chinese language education to a higher level.

The Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) is a non-profit professional educational institution for international Chinese language education, affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE), according to the official website of the organization. CLEC is committed to providing quality services for people from all over the world to learn Chinese and understand China.
