SCNU won four first prizes, 13 second prizes, five third prizes and 14 Excellent Instructor Awards in the 2021 Tin Ka Ping Cup Teaching Skills Competition which was held from 22 to 24 December.
The Tin Ka Ping Cup Teaching Skills Competition is named after Dr. Tin Ka Ping, a renowned Chinese entrepreneur and philanthropist born in Guangdong. Hosted by the National Council for Professional Degrees in Master Education and undertaken by Zhejiang Normal University, the contest is currently the most influential postgraduate teaching skills competition nationwide. With 750 participants from 115 colleges and universities, the contest mainly targets at full-time undergraduates who major in education.
The competition is divided into 13 competition fields based on majors and teaching directions, and three entry quotas at most for each competition field were allowed in the preliminary competition for each university or college. Due to the epidemic, the final was held in the form of an on-line micro-class, where competitors were provided limited time to prepare the recorded teaching videos to present their teaching skills. Experts scored the on-line performance and gave the final result accordingly.
A total of 39 SCNU students enrolled in Master of Education program signed up for the contest. 22 of them were shortlisted for the final round and all were awarded prizes. For example, Chen Jinhong, master from the School of Foreign Studies, won the first prize in the Subject Teaching (English) group. He credited his good results to the guidance of his teachers. "The guidance team set up by our school was the strong backing for me to pass these tests. They accompanied us until the final and support and encourage me when I was under great pressure to prepare for the competition.”
SCNU attaches great importance to helping students to participate in competitions. According to Chen’s own experience, the instruction team consists of professional teachers at SCNU and front-line teachers outside. On-line tutorials had been arranged during the summer vacation to help polish the work of students for the preliminary competition. On top of that, training and guidance for micro-class recording were offered to help contestants to use recording courseware.

The contest has not only provided a platform for students with teaching potential to improve their teaching skills, class adaptability and other hands-on experience, but also fully demonstrated the academic capabilities and high level of teaching skills of our master students, said the university.
