A high-end forum on improving the competence of tutors of Masters of Education was held on the Shipai campus of SCNU on December 6, with aim to further promote the quality of postgraduate education at teacher training universities in China.

Yang Zhongmin, vice-president of SCNU, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. He introduced the current practise of the training of tutors of Masters of Education. He pointed out that SCNU had always attached great importance to the development of postgraduate studies in the field of education and the cultivation of the Masters of Education. “Quality should be the guide in cultivation of Masters of Education,” he emphasized.

Wu Baoyu, Director of the Guangdong Academic Degree Office, also gave an opening address. He said this training was of great importance to improve the level of university tutors in our province and promote the reform and development of postgraduate education. He also underlined that excellent political quality, noble ethics and professional quality were the three basic requirements that graduate tutors should meet.

Later during the forum, vice-president Yang Zhongmin awarded plaques to ten off-campus representative schools as joint training bases for postgraduate students, including the Affiliated High School of SCNU, Guangdong Experimental High School, Zhixin High school, etc. He also awarded employment letters for ten off-campus tutors of Masters of Education at the scene.
During the forum, relevant experts gave lectures on the four themes related to tutoring Masters of Education, including responsibilities of tutors, normalization of the training process, innovation of training approaches and qualitative improvement of the postgraduates.
Mo Lei, senior professor of liberal arts of the School of Psychology, expounded four qualities that university teachers and tutors should have based on the theme of “How to be good teachers and tutors for university students”. The qualities include inspiration, true scholarship, scientific research and team cooperation. “No weekends, no holidays, no summers and no winters. Then one will achieve something,” he insisted.

Gao Lingling, a Chinese expert at CNKI, a Chinese on-line publishing platform, talked about “Improving Quality and Efficiency and Promoting In-depth Research Learning by the Exploratory and Collaborative Studies Platform.” She demonstrated the contribution of the platform to the promotion of competence in information literacy, innovation ability and the development of scientific research teams.

Wang Yuxi, Director of the Longhua District Education Bureau in Shenzhen, analyzed the recruitment, education, retention and management of doctoral students in “Cultivating Better People with Excellent People--the Cultivation and Professional Development of Young Teachers of Master’s Degree in Longhua”. Since its establishment, the Longhua District Education Bureau has always been developing the education “Talent +” strategy, and creating a new paradigm.

Quan Hanyan, a doctoral tutor of education in SCNU and president of the Guangdong Experimental Middle School, took “School-based Teachers’ Professional Development--Taking Guangdong Experimental Middle School” as an example. He analyzed concepts, such as teachers’ professional development, and summarized how the school promoted teachers to embark on the educational survival mode of autonomy, creativity and sustainability, by means of teachers’ consciousness and school promotion.

The forum was hosted by the Graduate School and the College of Teacher Education of SCNU, co-sponsored by the Exploratory and Collaborative Studies Platform of CNKI. Nearly 25,000 people from the UK, Japan and other countries, as well as Beijing, Guangdong and other provinces and municipalities in China, participated in the forum on line and on site. It was also reported by media including Nanfang Plus and Guangdong Radio and Television Station. Following the forum, a nine-day training program was arranged for participating tutors, which lasted from December 17 to 25.
