SCNU held the commencement and degree-conferring ceremony for 2021 graduates on its three campuses from June 24-26. Affected by the pandemic, the ceremony was held both on line and on the ground, with representatives of teachers and over 200 undergraduate, master and doctoral graduates participating in person, with over 12,000 graduates watching the ceremony via a video link.

At 8:30 a.m. on June 24, the commencement ceremony started with the singing of the national anthem of China on the Shipai campus, the main venue of the graduation ceremony. President of SCNU, Wang Enke, delivered a speech titled "Shoulder due responsibilities in our times", and warmly congratulated the students who graduate this year.
“It is the support from all sectors of the society and the efforts of all the teaching staff and students that enables SCNU to development continuously despite great difficulties. Thank you all for your hard work and your deeds bringing honor on our school!”

He put forward three hopes for graduates. Firstly, he hoped that all graduates should always “bear the country in heart and serve the country with sincerity”. Secondly, he encouraged them to “sincerely carry out what they’ve learned with courage and perseverance, sturdily shoulder your duty”. Thirdly, he called on them to equip themselves with strength to “face challenges, make a contribution to our country” and finally, be a SCNUer of honesty, firmness and capability. At the end of the speech, he wished the students a prosperous future and welcomed them to come back school often.

The receiver of the 2021 National May 1 Labor Award, Professor Zhao Gansen, gave graduates a speech as the representative of teachers. He expressed his expectations for graduates: never expect to start at the top, never feel feared about loneliness and never doubt the possibility of realizing your dreams. He also inspired graduates to apply what they have learned in SCNU to the society and contribute to the development of the society.

The representative of the outstanding graduates, Zhang Jiayin, who is going to Peking University to pursue a master degree in the next half year, also gave a speech at the commencement. She was deeply moved by the utmost sincerity and efforts from SCNU to hold the ceremony on time during this hard time caused by the pandemic. “Thank for the stages and opportunities provided by our school, the guidance and help from our teachers and the encouragement and companion from our classmates,” she said. She dedicated a handwritten blessing wish to SCNU, and wishes our dear school will be better and better!

After the speeches, vice president of SCNU He Jingxuan declared the award list of 100 outstanding undergraduates of the class of 2021 and vice president Shen Wenhuai delacre the winner of the “Zeng Yonggu Scholarship” for graduating students. Following the commencement ceremony, Mo Lei, the director of the SCNU Academic Committee, followed by five presiding professors, held the scepter and walked in solemnly, which marked the beginning of the degree awarding ceremony.

On June 25 and June 26, the degree-conferring ceremony was also held on the University town campus and the Nanhai campus. By this, all ceremony came to a successful end.

Tan Wanhua, from the School of Law was awarded the title of "Outstanding Graduate". She said the students here are very caring and the learning atmosphere is excellent. "I am grateful for the support and help I received from my classmates and teachers along the way." Tan Wanhua is even more grateful to herself in the pass, who was always clear about her goal and brave enough to achieve it. "Congratulations to myself for overcoming difficulties that I once thought unsolvable, and happy graduation!"

As for Gao Yu, a student from the College of Vocational and Technical Education, said in the past four year she has been considering her future development goals, constantly enriching herself and striving to become even better. "I am honored to be a SCNUer, and I hope I can keep improving myself and surpassing myself on the road ahead. I hope SCNU will get better and better in the future!" said Gao Yu, who will soon continue her study in the far west of China.“Going to where many kinds of resources are needed most is what I want to do!”

Dong Guangzhu, a teacher of the School of Chinese Language and Literature, obtained his doctorate this year, just in time to graduate with his students. "It's very ceremonial for me to graduate with my students!" Over the past four years, he has grown and progressed together with his students. Whenever he recalls, he can always count plenty of touches and pride. For the graduates who are about to start their next journey, Mr. Dong hopes that after the baptism of the epidemic, the students will be able to hold on to their hearts and forge ahead.

Due to the epidemic control measures, all the graduates in school were arranged in batches to finish the routine. For those who could not arrive at the scene, SCNU promised to rearrange a degree awarding ceremony for them in the latter half of the year or in the next winter vacation by making an appointment.
