A national conference on the accreditation of teacher training courses was held at South China Normal University on April 9. With the theme of "Promoting Teacher Training Accreditation and High-Quality Development of Teacher Training", more than 200 people attended the event in-person and nearly 5,000 people joined it through livestreaming.

Liu Limin, former vice minister of the Ministry of Education and chairman of the accreditation expert committee, said in his speech: "Teacher education professional accreditation is based on China's national situation, upholds the new concept of education development, responds to the new requirements of teacher training, and draws on international experience, which is a pioneering work,” he said. “We hope that the teacher groups will work together to promote the high-quality development of teacher education and professional accreditation."

Speaking at the conference, Song Lei, the deputy director of the Department of Teachers' Work of the Ministry of Education stressed that teacher training and professional certification is a strategic point to improve the evaluation of teacher training colleges and universities in the new era. He also suggested that in the future it is still necessary to carry out high-quality teacher training and professional certification, to further improve the overall planning, to build a high-quality teacher education system as well as a high-quality teaching force.

Fan Wei, director of the Higher Education Teaching Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education, pointed out that the new round of auditing and evaluation will be carried out soon as a pilot assessment is completed, and all relevant universities should include this work in the 14th Five-Year Plan as required. Fan Wei emphasized that higher education assessment and certification monitoring should effectively implement the fundamental task of establishing moral education, to improve the classification evaluation, and guide schools to establish a perfect quality assurance mechanism.

Na Jia, deputy director of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, highlighted the importance of professional certification for teacher training . “Up to now, SCNU has had five teacher-training majors accredited, three majors are being reviewed for accreditation, and a teacher-training majors accreditation work platform as well as a teacher education quality monitoring center have both been established at SCNU, which makes a positive contribution to the teacher-training majors accreditation work in Guangdong Province." Na Jia noted at the meeting.

Zhu Kongjun, secretary of the Party Committee of SCNU, said that SCNU has successively undertaken the development of a teacher training professional certification system. He suggested that SCNU will comprehensively improve the teaching quality of teacher-training majors and strive to make greater contributions to improving the quality of basic education in Guangdong province.

At the conference, Liu Limin, Song Lei, Fan Wei and Zhu Kongjun jointly inaugurated the Teacher Education Quality Monitoring Center of South China Normal University. "The center provides reliable data support for the professional certification work for teacher training, and also gives us a modern technical tool for quality monitoring and certification work." Liu Limin said that the center strengthens the application of information technology and makes full use of Internet big data statistics and cloud computing technology, which is conducive to promoting the continuous development of monitoring and assessment of other professions.

Later that day, a forum for teacher training accreditation exchange was also held. Educational experts from all over the country shared their understanding and work experience of professional certification of teachers from different perspectives. The participants unanimously agreed that the professional accreditation system for teacher training is in line with the actual situation in China, and the accreditation standards are highly compatible with the development of teacher education, which can effectively enhance the ability to train a highly qualified and specialized teaching force and promote the high-quality development of teacher education.

The certification of teacher training majors is a system launched by the Ministry of Education to promote the revitalization of teacher education and improve the quality of teacher training. The work on the certification of teacher training courses was officially launched in January 2018. By the end of 2020, about 4,200 undergraduate teacher education courses and programs had undergone three rounds of monitoring, and a total of 483 courses and programs had carried out accreditation work, according to the press release.
