Dubbed as “the most special party”, this year’s welcoming art show for the freshmen in 2020, goes digital due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Different from previous years, the program high-lights the spirit of fighting against coronavirus, combining the theme of the current pandemic with traditional Chinese culture. All program items have been selected and pre-recorded, making it possible for everyone to enjoy the show on the internet.
Show saluting the anti-pandemic spirit
Block the ball! Block the virus! Put on a show symbolizing the combat of the epidemic and recovering prosperity. In this program item, girls dressed as nurses and boys as soldiers tried hard to block the passing of a basketball, which stood for the coronavirus, high-lighting the theme of the cooperation between medical staff and the military in the fight against the epidemic.
With regard to this performance, He Jiaqi, the team leader of the freestyle basketball team on the Shipai campus, said, “Though the process was tiring, we could convey the spirit of combating the epidemic through freestyle basketball, which made us delighted and proud!”
Players integrated movements into emotional music, expressing the charm of freestyle basketball.
Another show named Dance for Youth was adapted to various styles of street dance with the purpose of emphasizing the passion and potential of young people. Symbolizing the spirit of young soldiers it showed in the anti-pandemic battle field. As the most energetic and creative part in the society, young students of SCNU expressed their revolutionary zeal and perseverance through the dance, making their promises to protect the country in the face of danger.
Passion and enthusiasm lie in the movements of dancers.
The song, Power of Youth, highly praised medical workers who devoted themselves to anti-pandemic work. Composers wrote the song in the view of young doctors who stood out without second thought, risking their precious youth and lives facing the horrible coronavirus. Also, the song advocated young students to fully make use of their power and to take their responsibility to protect the country.
Deeply moved by the significance of the song, Zeng Junheng, a freshman of the School of Physical Education & Sports Science, expressed his hope that he could be able to guard the country in the future, as medical workers did during the early days of the pandemic.

Traditional Chinese culture flashed up
Under the theme of Youthful Blossoms in anti-epidemic fight, this year’s show also featured lots of elements of traditional Chinese culture. Heroic flower is a good case in point. It was designed based on the revolutionary story which praised the courage of soldiers in the face of coronavirus. “This dance was chosen because of its cultural characteristic. Moreover, it is worthwhile to conduct the precious specimen of world intangible cultural heritage and Chinese traditional culture.” The lead dancer Zhang Danni thus introduced the cultural background of the dance.
Heroic flower aimed to inherit Chinese traditional culture through its movement.
The Soul of China was a show about martial arts (a kind of Chinese sports), which involved plenty of wonderful ideas. The core arrangement mixes a variety of martial art skills and traditional movements as well as adding some elements of competitive martial arts on the foundation of traditional martial arts.
As the instructor of the martial arts team, Niu Xiaomei, intended to show the beauty of martial arts and express the appreciation of the people who devoted themselves to the war of combating the epidemic through the best stage with her team.
All performers demonstrated Tai-Chi fluently in the end, presenting the glamour of it.
The Cute Huadan (Huadan: an active and innocent female role in Chinese traditional opera), which was performed by the students of the School of Music, integrating elements of Peking Opera and dance perfectly.
