The Challenge Cup and SCNU
The Challenge Cup contest, initiated in 1989, is reputed as the Chinese Olympics of science and technology among Chinese college students. In China, the Challenge Cup consists of two parallel projects, the National Undergraduate Business Plan Contest and the National Undergraduate Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest. Each project takes turns and is held every other year. At the beginning, it was a cup initiated by 19 universities and drawing participation of about 300 competitors, but now it attracts submissions from about 2 million students of more than 1,000 Chinese universities. Its appeal and influence on the students has been growing significantly day by day. (Source: Website of the Challenge Cup, China)
SCNU has attached great importance to the Challenge Cup. As of June 2019, SCNU has accumulated a grand total of 1 National Grand Prize, 3 First Prizes, 13 Second Prizes, 10 Third Prizes, and 39 Guangdong Grand Prizes. It has not only maintained the qualification as being one of the first contenders in the contest, but also won several Provincial Victory Cups.

SCNU’s special attention to the cultivation of creative talents
For a long time, our school has been paying special attention to the cultivation of creative talents. With a focus on “the Challenge Cup” contest series, we have actively promoted the “Program for Outstanding Talents” to carry out extracurricular scientific research. What’s more, we set up a system for it, which is divided into three levels, school-level, university-level, and province-level. The system includes different parts, for example, the plans for cultivating “Golden Seed” preparing for “the Challenge Cup”, some general projects of extracurricular research, cultivating plans for scientific research in different schools. And on this basis, SCNU vigorously encourages students to take part in the provincial "Climbing Program”, and construct a “four-in-one“ mode of education, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, which integrates deeply the cultivation of the elite, ideological education, social needs, discipline development, and education internationalization.
As of 2019, the students of SCNU have carried out more than 1800 scientific research projects, and nearly ten thousand students participated in those university-level research projects. In the Guangdong “Climbing Program”, 120 projects have been approved, of which 28 key projects and the sum of patronage totaled up to 2.07 million yuan. 23 projects have already applied for patents, while 75 papers have been already published, 29 of which are included in the SCI.
