On the morning of October 23, the first 5G holographic lecture debuted at the Shipai campus. SCNU is the first to introduce 5G holographic technology into cross-campus teaching activity among universities in the South China region, according to local media.

Relying on the characteristics of 5G networks with low delay and high bandwidth, this special lecture was able to be carried out on two campus simultaneously, the Shipai campus and the University Town campus, using the technology of holography.

When Wu Jing, the professor from the School of Marxism, was giving a live lecture on the University Town campus, the class data was instantly transferred to the stage of the gymnasium on the Shipai campus without any delay or internet lag via the 5G network, it seemed that the teacher was talking just in front of you.

Different from the previous plain video teaching mode, the "split body" on-site teaching presents and interacts in 3D, which is more vivid than the traditional one. This attempt is not able to achieve in the 4G times, since it needs higher-speed internet to support the regional video image transmission, the radio broadcasting, and the software for rapid data processing and integration.
5G technology exhibitions were also set up on site for open visit, which were divided into several experience booths including intelligent teaching, intelligent logistics, ideological education platform, IoT (Internet of Things). Among them, the VR immersion teaching booth, and the AR education booth attracted more attention from the visitors, for its capability of turning the abstract things in the book into the vivid things in front of you.

In addition to this amazing open class, this morning, Wang Enke, President of SCNU, and He Biao, the general manager of Guangdong Unicom, officially signed the 5G smart University strategic cooperation agreement on behalf of both sides.

“The school has positioned informatization as one of the important development strategies of the school”, pointed out by Wang Enke, “the cooperation will jointly promote the in-depth integration the construction of the campus and the education informatization.”

“The traditional way of 2D image presentation is hard for the learners to catch the authentic structure of the human body, while with the help of 5G and 3D holograph module, it is easier for the students to understand the object from a more transparent angle.” Chen Zhan, a student from the School of Life Sciences said. He also showed a high confidence on the 5G Holographic Lecture and the prospects of the 5G intelligent university building.
According to the agreement, in the future, Guangdong Unicom will build a holographic interactive teaching mode in different places through the data transmission using the super high speed network in 5G, to help the promotion and application of 5G technology in SCNU, and improve the level of education and teaching, technical research, and campus intelligent management.
