On 1 August, the unveiling ceremony of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Center of the National Engineering Laboratory for Education Big Data Application Technology (refer to as "the center") was held at the Shipai campus of South China Normal University (SCNU). President of SCNU Wang Enke, the president of Xidian University and director of the National Engineering Laboratory for Technology of Education Big Data Application Yang Zongkai, dean of the Institute of Science and Technology Development of Huazhong Normal University Cao Qinglin, executive deputy director of the National Engineering Technology Research Center for Digital Learning of Huazhong Normal University and deputy director of the National Engineering Laboratory for Education Big Data Application Technology Liu Sannuya, general secretary of the National Engineering Technology Research Center for Digital Learning Luo Lihua, and some other leaders of related school departments as well as teacher and student representatives attended the ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by vice president of SCNU Ma Weihua.

Wang Enke, on behalf of SCNU, delivered a speech. He said that the establishment of the Center is an irresistible trend and of great significance in deepening the implementation of the spirits of the 19th CPC National Congress and promoting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area to become one of the world's top-level bay areas. He suggested that we should seize this opportunity, establish a normalized cooperation mechanism and make efforts in four aspects, namely, building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into an important platform for education big data application technology, establishing an important support for the construction of "New Teachers" in Guangdong Province, creating a typical case of the SCNU strategy oriented towards "Internationalization and Informatization with high-level talents and a high-end platform", and establishing an important base for the industry chain of educational big data in the National Engineering Laboratory for Education Big Data Application Technology.

Yang Zongkai pointed out that the center has been established at the perfect time and at the perfect place with adequate support. With the support of one center and one platform, we should take a pragmatic approach to further develop the center, give full play to the strengths of the two universities through cross-border integration, collaborative innovation and education, so as to push forward the construction of the organizational structure as soon as possible and fully promote the development of the center. During the ceremony, Ms. Liu Sannvya also made a brief introduction about the National Engineering Laboratory for Education Big Data Application Technology and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Center.

Witnessed by relevant leaders from both universities, Wang Enke and Yang Zongkai signed the cooperation agreement and unveiled the opening of the center.

After the ceremony, Yang Zongkai made an academic report titled Data-Driven Personalized Learning presided over by Professor Xu Fuyin, former member of the Education Review Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, former chairman of Ministry of Education Teaching Steering Committee. In his report, Yang highlighted the main challenges we face, previous practice, and  the prospects for future trends on the stage of Education Informationization 2.0. In his opinion, how to achieve individualization at scale —cultivating individualized innovative talents is the core issue that we need to develop at this new stage of integration and innovation.

It is reported that the National Engineering Laboratory for Education Big Data Application Technology is the first national engineering laboratory in China dedicated to the education industry, specializing in educational big data research and application innovation. It was formally approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in January 2017. Led by Huazhong Normal University and jointly built by relevant units, it has become an important part of the national science and technology innovation system.
