On the afternoon of April 7, South China Normal University (SCNU) and The University of Western Australia (UWA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for further academic and research collaboration.
UWA’s Pro Vice-Chancellor Jennifer Howell and Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor Maggie Jiang led a delegation to SCNU. Vice President Wang Chunchao met with the guests at the Shipai Campus. The meeting was chaired by Tan Weihong, Director of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation, with representatives from the Foshan Campus International Education Demonstration Zone Steering Group, the Foshan Campus Management Committee, the School of Electronic Science and Engineering (School of Microelectronics), the School of Life Sciences, the School of Education, and the Aberdeen Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

Wang Chunchao noted SCNU’s commitment to internationalization, highlighted by its joint institutes with the University of Aberdeen and Rennes School of Business. He acknowledged UWA as a distinguished member of Australia’s Group of Eight, recognized for its outstanding academic and research excellence. He voiced his expectation that the memorandum would deepen pragmatic cooperation between the two universities.

Jennifer Howell highly commended SCNU’s remarkable achievements in international education. “The two universities share similar historical heritage and highly complementary strengths,” she remarked. “The potential for collaboration is truly promising.” She added that UWA values this partnership and views this signing as a new starting point for advancing strategic ties.
During the meeting, school heads introduced their programs and discussed opportunities for collaboration with UWA. Both sides held in-depth talks on a proposed joint institute. Wang Chunchao and Jennifer Howell then signed the Memorandum of Understanding, marking a new stage in bilateral cooperation.
Following the meeting, the delegation visited the Nanhai Campus in Foshan. They toured the New Engineering Building and visited several specialized laboratories, including those for Motion and Control, Digital Systems and Logic Simulation, Electronic Technology, and Communication Principles and Intelligent Perception and Control. The visit offered the delegation a comprehensive overview of the campus’s engineering education facilities and the ongoing development of the International Education Demonstration Zone.
