SCNU has achieved a new breakthrough by having the discipline of Biology and Biochemistry listed in the global top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), according to the latest ESI statistics released by Clarivate Analytics on January 9.

SCNU biology and biochemistry ranks ESI top 1%.

So far, 14 disciplines of SCNU have been listed in the global top 1% of the ESI, namely Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Environment/Ecology, Plant & Animal Science, Social Science (general), Psychiatry/Psychology, Mathematics, Physics, Clinical Medicine, Neuroscience and Behavior Science, Computer Science, Agricultural Science and Biology and Biochemistry, covering more than half of the ESI professional fields. Seven disciplines rank in the ESI top 5‰, including Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental/Ecology, Plant & Animal Science, Social Science (general) and Psychiatry/Psychology, among which the first four are listed in the global top 3‰ of the ESI.

According to the statistics, the major contributor to the newly added discipline, Biology and Biochemistry, involves 18 schools at SCNU. The School of Life Sciences, the College of Biophotonics, the School of Environment, the Institute of Brain Science and Rehabilitation Medicine, South China Academy of Advanced Optoelectronics, have made outstanding contributions, among which the School of Life Sciences has the highest contribution proportion of 37.1%.

Up till now, the total number of SCNU disciplines that are listed in the top 1% of the ESI ranks third among normal universities in China. SCNU ranked 826 globally, up 86 places from the same period in 2024.
